I’m looking for a 570s Spider and wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of a good buyers guide?

☝️

This is how I started. Pay the extra for a straight one and self warranty if your planning on owning for 3 years so you build up a buffer; if it’s 12 month ownership have the warranty so you have fixed costs. It’s a an unnecessary toy so plan for some depreciation and lots of fun.

Honestly you want an inspection regardless.

I did my research and indeed found a few common niggles to watch out for, but you can almost guarantee every car has anywhere from 5-20k of work required to get it up to snuff. Whether a dealer has done it in prep or indeed will do after a 3rd party inspection is a different question.

Off the top of my head:

Paint, obviously. Either get one that's recently been resolved or budget £!500 per panel to be safe.
Iffy exterior trim pieces - especially as there's loads of them around the folding roof. The bits that aren't body colour like to fall off.
Likewise seals, once sat right and tidy it is watertight but they're often not like that.
Door hinges & alignment, check they've been replaced and the doors sits properly now.
Exhaust alignment, melts the bumper - 'they all do that sir' but can be improved / mitigated a bit with alignment.
Interior trim - overall not bad but the door speakers like to get loose and also the air vents.
Check everything inside works thoroughly, sounds stupid but annoying to get halfway home and realise DAB doesn't work. Move the seats every way, try the heaters, check the mirrors dip, check all the submenus and features are there.
Check wheels for scoring from stones getting between caliper and barrel, aswell as typical chipping.
Check there's a noticeable difference in suspension hardness between modes.
Any suspension squeaks/rattles, bushes/arms need doing and they're not cheap.
Likewise springs can snap and you can't really tell without a ramp.
Some top end ticking on cold start is ok but should be smooth once warm.
Check the indicators auto cancel / generally behave.
Try the wipers & spray, the motors do die and they have a weird rest position.
Check the electric windows behave on door open/close both with roof up and down.
Check the wheel arch liners are still attached properly and not shredded by wonky tyres.
Check the front lift works.
Underfloor brake ducts / aero likes to get knocked off.
Get it aligned / budget to do it, it will probably be out.

You get the idea, do all the above and then get an inspection anyway as you can't easily inspect for leaks yourself.

Have to agree with get an inspection, I did this after purchase and got reasonably lucky but still uncovered a few small faults, some covered under McLaren Warranty some not.

Hinges and paint are not covered, I negotiated a new hinge with the car luckily. Or buy from AB or Thorney, all done then.

This was a useful video I thought:

Broadly agree. Bought a mint condition car privately that was low miles / full mclaren history and had 10 months warranty remaining having recently had a full service and inspection at Mclaren.
The following years service threw up no major issues other than a split windscreen washer bottle and faulty USB port both done under warranty by mcLeeds without any hassle during the service.
I had the few usual electronic glitches during ownership with the keys often not being found and the comfort entry seat quite often not moving the seat forward or back leaving you stuck and unable to get in and drive. Locking the car up amd walking away for 5 mins generally cured this

Sold it privately in a similar condition having had a service and inspection at Leeds and with transferable mclaren warranty as a private sale.
New owner has had zero issues until recently as the dreaded body corrosion has started on both rear arches, mclaren have now waved him bon voyage to any claim as the car is 6yrs old, so he's in to about £1500 for two complete bare metal wing resto paint jobs.

As others have said go in with eyes wide open, there are some very good cars out there and some crap.
Alaister Bols, Thorney or mclaren are my suggested sources if you don't want to take on a private purchase.

Paint and hinges and you're there. Most 570s Spiders are at the age it's about due / falling out of warranty cover. Of course there will be cars that need nothing but I do think that's the minority right now.

Just saying it's well worth your due diligence and recommend an inspection regardless. Buy from AB/Thorney/McLaren to mitigate it, which is what I did. Point is they will all do that work before sale but many dealers will not and it's up to you to find the problems and negotiate the deal, easier said than done.

Nothing wrong with an inspection, and I'm sure some cars will need money spent on them. But I think this is a massive exaggeration :

Had my 570s Spider 5 years from new - it would be rather foolish to buy one without a warranty - also establish a good relationship with your Mac dealer - I found this to be invaluable smile - Brilliant cars..
