before I bought my 430 ferrari I didnt do enough checking to find out what goes wrong with them ( mostly clutches and manifolds) . If I buy a McLaren I dont want to make the same mistake.

So what goes wrong with McLaren 5 series and how often, how likely is each problem issue. What do they cost to deal with

can those who havent had any issues please comment too

Odd replies given that the guarantee runs at £5k pa. I would always assume this number reflects relaibility and parts prices so it suggests that each year something expensive fails or maybe an engine every 5 or 6 years.

It just seemed odd to me that replies suggested quiote good reliability with all likely issues ( mainly paint) sorted in the intial 3 years factory guarantee. But the hefty guarantee price suggests regular expensive issues thereafter.

Dont get me wrong. Its nice to hear positive responses . Most forums are full of posters with problems and give an overly negative view of reliability.

Driven a 6 series a couple of times but not a 5 series. Fabulous cars.

I agree about the head bit - but only up to a point. Wouldnt be dithering between a Fezza and the McLaren if I was just making a sensible decision. I'd buy a Hyundai SUV or similar. But we are all different. I suffer with depression and the ability to get things out of all proportion. So I bought a 430 and then made myself miserable worrying about manifolds and clutches. Neither problem happened. Neither would have been financially significant for me. But none of that helped at 3 in the morning.

People say " snap out of it" but you cant. Its irrational but its there all the time.

But back to the real subject, Ferrari have the plus of lots of indies, discounted parts prices and to be fair normally pretty reliable mechanicals. I can get a 360 engine rebuilt for 10k. A McLaren engine would be more like 35k I believe.

Well if you’re going to compare a 360 motor to a Mac 3.8 V8, I would expect the latter to be more bullet proof. It’s designed to withstand turbo charging up to full boost, but you don’t run it at full boost most of the time.
I wsnt comparing the engineering of the two engines though I would back a Ferrari engine any day. They always say that with a Ferrari you buy an engine and get the rest of the car thrown in. No what I was comparing were relative costs. Not only do McLaren parts seem more expensive but the car is pretty complex electronically with lots of sensors servos etc to fail. And all to be handled by an official dealer because indies arent allowed.

Now those links are useful and a bit reassuring. Can they get supplies of parts - a dealer had told me that McLaren only sold to their own dealers. Yes he would say that but he might also be right.

Does anyone kinow if they have access to the necessary computer software
