That's good to hear mate. Are you getting any accessories?
I've looked at a few tonneau covers etc but to have one whilst retaining the original roll bars are silly money. So I've been watching a few YouTube videos on making your own. Looks pretty straightforward so I think that's what I'm going to do.
Think I'm going to get the tailgate central locking kit too, only about £40 from Aliexpress.
Some people knock AliExpress stuff, I rarely have any trouble with it. Sure, some of it can be a bit low-rent but you get what you pay for. I fitted a Wireless Carplay/Android Auto box to our Scirocco recently for under fifty quid, and it's perfect. Not going to buy anything expensive apart from a towbar. Might be able to wangle a tonneau from a mate’s accessories business though. Gone upto 44k now. Given it says in the blurb, MUST BE REGISTERED BY 31ST DEC I reckon they had fleet emissions targets to meet for 2023.In 2024 the ZEV mandate comes into force. 22% of cars sold and 10% of vans sold must be ZEV or the manufacturers face huge fines. Every year the % will increase until its 100% in 2035. I reckon these EV fire sales in December will become an annual thing.

I doubt it but it will allow Tesla and others to make some extra money. In 2024 the ZEV mandate comes into force. 22% of cars sold and 10% of vans sold must be ZEV or the manufacturers face huge fines. "The measures give the wide range of manufacturers flexibility through a trading scheme, enabling them to bank compliance in years when they exceed annual targets for use in future years or trade them with other manufacturers that have fallen short. In the first year, car manufacturers can borrow for up to 75% of their annual target, falling to 25% in 2026, to support them in the early stages."

Any pure EV manufacturer will have scope to sell credits, as well as companies like MG who seem to be selling largely EV cars these days.
So mostly Chinese Market entrants.
At £15k a pop, I doubt manufacturers will be giving this cash to their competitors, unless they sell the credits on the cheap? So mostly Chinese Market entrants.
Why would VW give Tesla a hundred million quid for example, when they could just just use that money to distort the EV market instead? They would be better just selling more EV's of their own at a discounted price to arrive at the 22% target.
This story will have a long way to run and will be an interesting watch. Govt is under pressure to reduce inflation. Manufacturers could hike the ICE car prices, which in turn, inflates the used car market, increasing inflation and then point the finger at the Govt saying that the fines, ultimately, are paid by the consumer. Which is absolutely correct by the way. The manufacturers won't operate at a loss and Ford/Toyota are expected to be looking at fines in the £400/500 million region this year. Those costs will be shouldered by the consumer eventually and I'm not sure if Joe Public can see this stealth tax.
Expect to see more large battery hybrids too. The cars for the the 'EV' target don't actually need to be EV, they need to be capable of 100 miles on the battery (down from 120 miles) so we might see a big push for large battery hybrids.
If I wanted a new EV, I would be buying in December 2024 to take advantage of the inevitable race to meet these targets. That could potentially trickle down to the used EVs as well, with bargains to be had on both used and new.

I don't know, but they currently do buy them from Tesla. So it must not be that easy.Toaster Pilot said:
IIRC the reason you could buy a brand new MG ZS EV for £20k towards the end of 2020 was because VW were buying credits from them in some form.
I assume cheaper for them to sell their own car at a discount to increase their % EV sales than buy the balancing credits from Tesla?Whatever the ins and outs, from day one of the escalating emissions fines and targets, credit buying/selling has been a thing.
I saw that Reddit thread about losing 20k on one on Christmas Day and spent the next week finding one. Managed to get on through Vanzone for 169+vat 700 down. Coming direct from the port in the next few weeks. Drive around the county to useless dealers who were all quoting 400+ a month.
You’re correct in your assumption about the emissions targets. Two different dealers confirmed the story to me

Just had confirmation of reg number today and signed agreement etc. Apparently now need to wait for 14 days (cooling off period), then it will be delivered. So hopefully only a couple more weeks which will come in handy for my daughter who’s moving house at the end of the month!

The cooling off period gives you the option to return the vehicle in the first couple of weeks as well, but you are not getting it until then…..Gassing Station | EV and Alternative Fuels | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
