Engine design for specialist low volume low weight cars should be in it's own topic and not here as it has no relevance.

We were not talking about Engine design for specialist low volume cars ( The Caterham uses a 660CC Suzuki engine, think it's used in the midi style vans ???)

I was looking at sub 1 litre engines capable of powering everyday transport, such as my own wifes CitiGo, 10 years old, been around the planet 3 times & sailed through every mot without a single advisory, if post 2030 cars like this were still to be sold, then why go EV ???

You can have a micro city car with enough power to pull the skin of a rice pudding slowly and almost no luggage space, or with the same emissions or less with EV you can have an actual useable car. But you stick to your sub micro go ahead.
What, and only go less than 100 miles on a cold day then wait for hours to fill up the 'electron tank',??? got better things to do with my time.rolleyes

I can see why that might be a problem for people who are incapable of doing two or more things at once.

I'm not sure what durability for MOT has to do with engine design. Three times around our planet is nothing its it? A mere 120,000 km

The Citygo is not a family car. It weighs about 900kg approximately the same as my 205GTi and more than my S1 Exige.

You have successfully confirmed my position that small engines have totally inadequate torque to drive the average family saloon circa 1.5T let alone and SUV.

EVs help reduce pollution in cities.

You've totally missed the point, !!!! I believe there is/was a proposal ( And it may have been internet/newspaper/Fred at the chippy???) that post 2030
ICE would be allowed to be sold for a further 5 years, subject to being 1 litre or less. Now all I am saying is that 1 litre is more than enough for the 'average' family's motoring needs The 1 Litre Golf TSi being a case in point. All the huge EV SUV's are that big to carry the battery packs, not Mr & Mrs
Blogg-Smythes + 2.4 gender neutral offspring that would fit into a Golf etc, etc. ). 10 year old 1.2 motors, ie Ford Focus, could easily be replaced by 2025 technology 1 litre motors giving the same BHP. My current 2.5 litre Motorhome at 110 bhp is soon to be replaced, Looking at the VW/MAN option I can get 150BHP+ from 2 litres. ( ps; so a 205GTi is not a Family Car ???? 4 seats/boot/!!!! confused )

Had an MGZS EV for a couple of months now in NZ.

Cost 22,000 pounds after government rebate (VAT is only 15% here)

Done one long trip and had to use 50kW chargers at 40p a kWhr.

Otherwise it's virtually all hydro power at 5.5p a kWhr.

Only problem so far... I can't find the odometer.

The 200 mile range on a run in summer is so much better than the 24kW Leaf it replaced.

So to answer the original OP question, NO.

Will never buy another ICE vehicle again - hateful things.
Hi, as the OP I don't have an issue with EV's per say, it's just an alternate drive system, BUT, if cars like this are supposed to save the planet from GW
then somebody needs a 'checkup from the neck up'

I could say only in the USA but:

I expect is will be driven by the same type as buy Mercedes G Wagons here.

Hardly mass market is it.
And that's my point. Somebody in Detroit is daft enough to put it into production.

Because any fuel you burn in a combustion engine causes pollution, and oil is a finite resource that's getting harder and more expensive to get out of the ground and process into petrol.
That's why the world is moving to EV's
Christ, You've opened my eyes to why we are going EV, until you told me this I had no idea. That's why there are so many huge great SUV sized EV's purring around the planet !!!! Dinky little ICE cars need to be banned , they have no right to be clogging up our dismal road system, we need to make more room for EV SUV's . We also need huge amounts of Green Belt to be dug up so Charging Points can be built + McDonalds and Costas , so EVers can stuff their faces while waiting. Fucensoredck this I'm going to buy shares in Starbucks and Subway, not in Tesla and Polestar. rolleyes

Electric traction is absolutely ideal for Bentley cars: almost silent with seamless torque. Cost and weight of the battery pack are much less significant too.

GT9, ( oh you forgot the word 'body') How you must look forwards to my own 'Sunday Service', now get your hymn book out, and let's sing from from psalm 1935> If God had wanted people to drive Electric Cars he would have made batteries grow on trees !!!. angel

Now off you pop and warm your PJ's on the rad before bedtime.

Oh & yes the EV Austin looks cool, BUT I want to be covered in oil, grease and WD40, not contact cleaner and AutoGlym !!!! biggrin

Well let's see if the idea of growing fuel on trees does indeed spark a 3 page debate.

What did you have in mind?

Grapes or maybe apples...

My favourite would be the banana up the tailpipe, Eddie Murphy style.
biglaugh Seriously, we grow fuel anyway, my old diesel camper ran on 20% rapeseed oil, and I think Mr Diesel actually ran his engines on peanut oil.
The Germans (Porsche) are looking at synthetic fuels, but then again I think Adolf made "petrol"in WW2. In fact fossil fuels are prehistoric forests anyway, so yes fuel does grow on trees. bow

As per a previous post you can grow fuel for transport, this 2 DP unit uses a box of carrots and 1/2 a hay bale per 100miles.

It produces a small amount of methane, but the owners roses look amazing biggrin

Scott Mills has revealed that he had to cancel a holiday after being locked in his electric car for five hours.

The BBC Radio 2 DJ shared the unfortunate anecdote with listeners during Monday’s (27 February) instalment of his radio show.

Mills had set off on Friday, with his fiancé, Sam Vaughan, intending to spend the weekend together in Amsterdam.

However, a flat car battery meant that Mills and Vaughan were stuck inside his car near the BBC’s Wogan House studios.

“I’ve had quite the weekend,” he said. “I said goodbye to you on Friday. Me and Sam agreed to head to the airport in my electric car at 4pm. Flight is at 8pm.

“Get in the car. Car doesn’t start. In fact, nothing works. I go to get out of the car. I can’t get out. Sam tries his door. Nothing. Also cannot leave the car.”
