I'm sure I read somewhere that the Lotus Eletre was built on the same platform as the EX30, Smart 1, etc.
I had a look at a review to see how it compares, and it's 3 times the price. It does look better-trimmed, and has a bigger battery, but 3 times the price!

3 feet longer. I guess if VW could build the Skoda Superb on the Golf platform, anything is possible.Googling suggests that the Eletre is indeed built on the same platform, a joint venture between Geely and Mercedes.

The Superb is based on the same platform as the Passat, VW B5 PL45+I'm really disappointed by the lukewarm reception to this car.
Our XC40 PHEV is due back in Feb, and this was high up on the list of potential replacements. The lack of a speedo in front of the driver rules it out completely, but the reviews I've watched and read make the touchscreen UI sound like a real mess.
Back to the drawing board, as February draws ever nearer. I think I'm going to take a look at the new Hyundai Kona instead. Similar size, 300+ mile range, and a slightly more traditional interior. Not as interesting, but potentially more liveable.

It’s really disappointing that they’ve got it so wrong, particularly when all they really had to do is implement the same HMI that the Polestar 2 has. There is lots of talk at the moment of Volvo moving away from AAOS and developing their own software. I can’t help but feel that will be a mistake, but time will tell. The biggest issue with the Kona is that you have to look at it. I’m amazed that Hyundai have got the proportions so wrong around the back end, and the look of the front. In person it’s really ungainly. As you say it’s such a shame the EX30 has these issues (and that the PCP/Lease rates don’t match up with the low RRP) as it’s a really pretty car. Before writing off the car based on reviews, a test drive is still a good idea. The screen may be actually OK to use for some people ...
I've driven cars without a speedo in front of the driver, and that's sadly a deal-breaker for me. The poor touchscreen UI is the icing on the cake, unfortunately.ThomW said:

For a couple of hundred quid a month saved and a speedo in my eyeline, I'm absolutely fine with the way it looks.

If you want quirkyness, have you seen a Smart #1 in the flesh? They have a small dash panel in front of the driver, and HUD on the higher-spec versions. More rear legroom than it's Volvo cousin. Our XC40 PHEV is due back in Feb, and this was high up on the list of potential replacements. Just a shame that the Smart has such "challenging" exterior styling. The roof looks like a stuck-on afterthought, a bit like that 2 seater Mini coupe from a few years ago.
The EX30 looks great from the outside. Maybe Geely will listen, and fit the Smart driver cluster and HUD to the Volvo after the initial pre-order rush dies down.
