China got the leap on the west when it comes to making batteries both cheap and efficient. China also makes much of the world's tech, and EVs are mechanically so simple that the tech is the bigger component.

Apple got this. Announced a car project which appears to have died. Xiaomi - who make really decent kit btw if you've never had any of their stuff - are ready to launch.

Remember that for so many people a car is just transport. An car. They aren't bothered. This first car looks like a Porsche with McLaren lights and does 0-60 in silly, but I expect this is just to plant their flag. Expect them to start chruning out mass market an cars in large numbers for little cash, and for them to be better than much of the legacy manufacturer models.

Its easy for VW to whine. They cheated on diesel and have never recovered. Their EVs are poor because they are cheaply built and expensive to buy, with endless packaging compromises and crappy tech. Not everyone has the same problem - look at Stellantis. Not every manufacturer has the right to exist when the competition have them for lunch...

From article -
"Mr Lei also said the SU7, which has drawn comparisons with Porsche's Taycan and Panamera models, would have a minimum range of 700km (435 miles), beating the Tesla Model 3's 567km."

Minimum range of 435 miles!!!!!

Looks amazing, but are we just converting $ to £ and assuming if and when it comes to the UK it will be £24K?

As many are finding out, buying a cheap EV is one thing but waiting for parts when something simple fails can be a real problem.

They’re churning the cars out at such a rate there is no capacity to make spares.

At the rate they're churning them out a replacement car is your spare parts biglaugh
But seriously BAIC are a massive company I don't see why they wouldn't have supply chain issues with manufacturing spares (given that there's no ICE engine components needing spare parts for)

Can't argue with the value proposition. Cheaper than a model 3, and the performance variant is crazy affordable for the power and range on offer.

Also I notice it's available in a wide range of colours. Tesla... scratchchin

Part of me assumes it can't possibly drive as well as some of the better European performance EV's, but I should be more open minded, perhaps it'll be surprisingly good. Can't wait to drive one and find out smile

Is a reputable dealer going to be selling them, or will you just amazon prime it?

You can buy a BYD at Mercedes Stockport, so I assume someone will pick up a franchise.

Isn't "reputable (car) dealer" a contradiction in terms?

£24k in China will translate to £40k+ in the UK for the base model, title is a bit misleading.

It seems we are getting closer and closer to someone releasing an actual car called the 6000 SUX.
Won't be getting 8.2 mpg mind you.
