What do we make of the MG5 EV? First estate EV to market and I reckon it’s going to sell in droves.

Building on the success of the ZS. Two trim levels, £24,495 and £26,995. Not sure the higher spec one is worth bothering with.

Brochure: https://mg.co.uk/files/2020-09-39/MG5_EV_Brochure_...

Seems like a decent value proposition although there are some very good deals on the ZS at the moment

I could see fleets buying loads of them though - perfect for taxi use for a start

The ZS EV seems reasonably well received though, I think they’re carving themselves out a reasonable reputation for electric cars that they haven’t had before.

It looks a little short? Looks more like a hatch back than an estate. Unless they photoshopped their own brochure badly.

ETA: just the 460 litres in the boot with the seats up. Even the pokey C class estate has a bigger boot and cars like the 308 SW are practically cavernous at 660!

Bigger boot than a typical hatchback but slightly smaller than some estates, doesn’t seem particularly bad really. I guess there’s some space taken by batteries.

Not sure about the retro analogue speedo but at least it's not such an obvious fossil conversion as the ZS EV.

Don't get me wrong, the ZS EV is a decent car, but when I test drove one it was really apparent that they took the ICE and wedged a (very good) electric drivetrain in it.
I find the analogue gauges in both rather odd in these times (spent last week driving a 2020 VW Tiguan with a digital instrument panel). The one in the 5 does look a lot nicer though.

The only thing which really looks worth having on the higher spec model is climate control (as opposed to old-fashioned AC on the lower spec).
I thought it was the heated seats myself (I don’t see auto climate as essential, you still end up messing around with it in most cars on longer journeys) - neither worth £2500 though.

Agree with you on being anti-pleather. It’s the problem I have with the ZS EV - I want the seats from the Excite and everything else from the Exclusive.

It's a good price. As above boot is a bit small: I'd want the same as my Passat GTE or more, not significantly less. But if it can help drive the price down and spur some other manufacturers to release estate EVs then great!
It’s not a competitor to a Passat in any way, it’s the size of a Golf/Astra estate.

rolleyes an extra 20% obviously sounds like more to me than you, fair enough.

It’ll do wonders for EV adoption when all those worthless MG EVs hit the used market then! laugh

Nobody paid £25k for a ZS 6-12 months ago, they’ve been heavily discounted since launch, which makes you wonder what the point in the list price actually is.

They appear to be discounting them already, £23k for a brand new “Exclusive” (£4k off list on AT) - ZS also under £20k now.
Hardly surprising. Seems to be a lot of pre-reg ZS around and the 5 will be no different.

I bought a ZS EV Exclusive last week for £22,500 brand new. Pre reg deals are only a couple of hundred cheaper.

I’m going to try and do a similar report on my 2020 MG ZS shortly, see what’s going on. If it’s a bit lacking I’ll get some Dynax under there.

It’s certainly a strange choice to be faced with - you can’t buy a second hand TM3 for £24k can you?

I've seen the first few pre-reg ones appearing on autotrader now. They have a square rear number plate. How odd. I expect that's for the Chinese market, but you'd think they'd adapt the tailgate slightly for the UK market.

Anyway, I expect one of these will be my main family car in about 2 years time when I can get a depreciated second hand one.
One dealer is advertising one with a square number plate. All of the press cars used in reviews had a standard one but it’s a tight fit.

Not as far as I’m aware. It has less features than the ZS in a few areas and I haven’t heard that it has preconditioning which people would be making a very big deal about!

It's a shame that it doesn't. It has all the makings of the perfect piece of automotive white goods, but cabin pre-conditioning is such a good reward to offset having to wrestle with a charge cable first thing in the morning. Maybe not a deal breaker, but it sent me back to looking at secondhand stuff.
Wasn’t a deal breaker for me but I definitely take her i3 for an early start on a cold morning over my ZS

Stick a 'leccy fan heater in the footwell on an extension lead while you eat your breakfast? Put it in the night before then you just flick a switch. Probably a fire hazard though.
laugh or, turn the car on and it heats up in a minute or two!
