LMP2 - Trouble brewing
Discussion
Something has to happen about the current situation. Last year there was a proposal about doing away with the 'silver' or 'bronze' requirement - but that was not popular.
John Hindhaugh from Radio Le Mans said when I suggested the following chassis: Oreca, Oak, Dallara and Riley... "Three out of four right"

Surely they wouldn't do that to Strakka/Dome?! And I think the delay in the HPD homologation is to reduce the width to 1900 so it will be good for the 2017 regs. Plus Dallara/Riley don't have a current chassis, I don't know why the FIA/ACO would do this to the people that have made it what it currently is.....the best non-works series in racing.John Hindhaugh from Radio Le Mans said when I suggested the following chassis: Oreca, Oak, Dallara and Riley... Well I might have missed something, but where is the current Dallara / Reiley support? I'm a relative newcomer to following LMP2, but IMO Zytek/Gibson have had more presence than the other two (admittably significant and historic) manufacturers.
To lose Dome would make me sad - I love those guys.

It has been mandated that one of the four will be a North American manufacturer, so the choice will be between Riley, HPD and whoever else wants to throw their hat into the ring over there. Remember, the DP manufacturers (Riley and Dallara) need a product to sell. (This does presume that Dallara will be seen as a European entrant other than North American)To lose Dome would make me sad - I love those guys.
One thing not to discount and I'm not sure of it has been ruled out in the proposed regs is that it may be possible to produce your own bodywork for a chassis, as per the Corvette bodykit for the DP chassis.

Oreca, Onroak, Dallara, Multimatic, engines from VW according to Mr Hindhaugh in the post Sebring show on RLM. John Hindhaugh from Radio Le Mans said when I suggested the following chassis: Oreca, Oak, Dallara and Riley... "Three out of four right"
Blatant protectionism of the French manufacturers.

If that's true it's crazy. In a class with 8 manufacturers this year only 2 make the list and 2 are selected who don't currently have an LMP2 chassis, or at least not one any of the top teams want to use.Blatant protectionism of the French manufacturers.
Wasn't this meant to help control costs? So make 9 teams throw away their current chassis and all the money they have invested in them, make 2 manufacturers design, develope and build new chassis, then make 9 teams buy brand new chassis and invest more time and money learning and developing them.

You know, if it goes through (and it's not for certain yet), LMP1-L starts to become interesting again for both chassis manufacturers and entrants with imagination.
You would have to cost cap chassis and engine costs. I'm not sure what Rebellions budget compared to someone like ESM or Strakka is but would imagine it's a step up. Do wonder what SMP would do!Gassing Station | Le Mans | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
