Hi PHers,

I am looking for a used SUV for my ageing parents. They are struggling to get in and out of their C Class due to low height and would like a mid size SUV.

It needs to be not too small as in the smaller ones, there is not much room to get in and out of the rear, and not too large so it easy for them to drive.

It will mainly be driven around London so a petrol with an auto box.

A key requirement is reliability. They just want it to work with the fewest issues. I have ruled out Fords and VAG group because their Auto boxes are not the best, seen and experienced a few issues with the Ford Powershift and VAG DSG. Looking more at Japanese and Korean cars because of this.

Budget is up to £18k, the newer the better and warranty would be a bonus.
Higher spec cars preferred, eg emergency braking, half leather, folding mirrors, parking sensors all round etc.

What would people recommend ?

I was thinking of the following;
- Suzuki Vitara 1.4 Auto in SZ5 trim
- Kia Sportage 1.6 Auto
- Mazda CX-30 - not sure if this will be high enough or big enough

Thanks. The IX35 seems to have stopped in 2015. Why that over say a Tucson ?

I'd imagine that the Kia/Hyundai pair are top of the warranty pile along with Lexus who give a warranty as long as they service it annually (if memory serves)

I think Kia give 7 years and Hyundai 5.

Suzuki give a warranty if you service it with them, up to 7 years or 100k miles.

Are the Nissan Quashqais reliable ? I

was under the impression they were not according to reliability surveys.

diesels aren't great, but that's due to dpf failure from stop start traffic. The 1.3 petrols ( Merc engines) are fine, as is the autobox, although its CVT. You can get a well specced one for 18k, just make sure it's main dealer supplied and FSH as this will allow for warranty extension and dealer goodwill to kick in should you need it.

Also Nissan's get a kicking in surveys as they are the chariot of choice for the MOTAB scroungers. And they complain about everything with their free car. So the negativity is a bit disproportionate.

Servicing is cheap on a QQ as well.

CX30 isn't great for access - not only is it not that high, the windscreen pillar gets in the way.

The CX5 is the obvious competitor to the Sportage - Mazda autos are apparently OK, and the 2.0 petrol engine is pretty solid.
The 2.2 diesel has a bit of a reputation for issues though.

Worst car we ever owned. Piece of st.

OP how about Honda CRV. Had ours a few years now sailed through every MOT, only ever need consumables replacing, no issues. 90k on the clock and drives like new.

Id suggest a Kia E-Niro
No gearbox to worry about, will do 200+ mile range (claimed 282).
Very little to go wrong/service with an electric motor.
Charge car on the driveway, safe money on fuel (on assumption they have driveway).

First editions can be had for under 20k last I checked
Come with all toys

Edit: Apologies, theyve gone up in price again (marginally)
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202305026...

But something like this, will still have 4 yrs warranty etc

I've had 4 cars equipped with DSG and never had a failure. The early issues lie with the 7 speed dry clutch boxes in the smaller cars, which were later solved. You won't find this box in the SUVs anyway. The DQ250 and following boxes are all extremely reliable. My last DSG sold at 200,000 miles going strong with only servicing.

That said, for ultimate reliability, it has to be a Lexus or Toyota, surely? What about a Lexus RX, or Toyota Rav4?

The Vitara, whilst reliable, is hideous inside. Coming from a C Class it'll feel awful imo. Cheap and nasty plastics everywhere.
Mazda's reliability isn't up there with the other Jap cars.
I don't like the Kia, found the seats to be very uncomfortable.

Also, the Qashqai recommendation is, imo, laughable. They are poorly built and bits will fall off. My mum had one, and by the end of it's 3 year warranty bits and pieces were falling off all over. That said, the gearbox and engine had no issues when it left us at 3 years and 65,000 miles.

The 1.3 is not a Mercedes engine, it's an evolution of a Renault/Nissan engine. Yes, Mercedes had say in its development, but it's far from a real Mercedes engine!

Have just sold our 6yr/35K Sportage GT Line Auto, the only issue during that time being a faulty nav update which caused the sound to come out of only one speaker.

Absolutely faultless apart from that, which was probably a dealer issue anyway, superb cars.

My parents (70-80s) are in a VW t-roc. They jumped down in size from the Tiguan and have not noticed a difference. Perfect for them two

Toyota CHR or Honda HRV. A petrol hybrid will be good for their sort of use.

Why do they want a mid size SUV if its just the two of them running around London?

The Korean cars, their engines aren’t the best according to the youtube mechanics I watch. I remember reading that they stopped developing them too, pivoting the bulk of their investment into electrified powertrains. Reviews I’ve watched also say their hybrid powertrains aren’t as well developed as Toyota’s and Honda’s.

Yup, we had a petrol auto qashqai. It was terrible. Least reliable car I've ever owned and I've been driving since 1997.
