Fastest car over 40mpg for £5k?

Would have to be practical and atleast C segment or bigger.

What do you reckon? I'm guessing something like a 120d in reality.

Doubt there's any medium to large petrol cars that return a genuine 40mpg at the price point.

Also assuming something like a 330d Touring wouldn't do it but maybe 35+ is easily achievable?

Golf isn't a bad shout although I doubt it's anywhere near the quickest.

123d is a good shout, think they did a 125d too.

Think the 125d was on the next gen. Not many 123d hatches about though, mainly coupes from what I've seen.

Depends how old you are willing to go (and if ulez matters to you). Mondeo ST 2.2 TDCi returns over 40.

ULEZ doesn't matter but would probably draw the line somewhere around 06, give or take a couple of years depending on condition.

Thinking about it my last car a Jaguar X350 diesel would do high 30's and 40 was achievable, probably a contender.

A Jaguar XF 3.0d V6 will do 0-60 in 5.9 and hit the 155 mph limiter. Should manage 40+ mpg if you are gentle, but realisitically will be more like 35 mpg.

If you want petrol, then Audi TT 2.0 TFSI will do 0-60 in 6.1 and onto a top end of about 150 mph. It might, just might manage 40 mpg if you feather the throttle on a gentle downhill with a breeze behind it

Define 'fastest'.
Top speed is not relevant for UK roads, so I'd be looking for something with reasonable acceleration from 40 to 80, I guess the BHP, weight and 0/60 times are the only indications we have?
Or do you want something that's pleasant to do a long journey as fast as road conditions allow?

Is that 40mpg over the OP's driving year? On long runs? On the euro-combined score?
I get over 45mpg from a diesel, but I don't do much 'urban' driving at all.
Also the real mpg will vary with the driver.
Also if your budget is £5k, you want to be careful about picking a car which is likely to be cheap to run in terms of serving/repairs/insurance/depreciation.
Also with the price of diesel these days, you need 45mpg from a diesel to match 40 mpg from a petrol.

£5k is a lot if it goes wrong and loses a lot of value in a year, a bargain if you get 4 low-hassle years from it.

TBH that's more depth than I've given it thought.

It would have to do atleast 30mpg round the houses and then 40+ on a run. Be practical enough for 2 toddlers worth of crap plus a German Shepherd occasionally.

The OH being used to an EV it would need a good slug of torque which rules out most if not all petrol cars at the budget IMO.

I'm not afraid of high mileage and i do all my own maintenance which does allow for a E90 Touring with the 330d but most are presumably shagged by unsympathetic owners at that age and mileage.

As it would primarily be my OHs car it has to pass the looks test which is often unfathomable but probably rules out stuff like Old Volvo's, as much as I like the D5 engine.

Diesel dipped under 150ppl near us recently do that petrol/diesel discrepancy has narrowed hugely.

Ive owned a Jag XF 3.0D S for the last two and a half years coming from 2 530Ds. I wouldn't be picking a Merc or BMW over it , buy wisely they're lovely cars in the right spec ( mine has the bigger wheels and brakes, higher output engine, full electric heated sports seats etc), the only issue i can see is you said you'd occasionally carry a German Shepard. I'd describe the XFs interior as "cosy" rather than spacious.
Edited to add - i get around 30mpg booting it around Milton Keynes and between 45 - 50 maybe 52 mpg on the motorway.

Just bought one of these last week and have been left wondering how the fk I didn't buy one sooner. Fast, the most indulgent thing I've ever owned in terms of comfort and a trip from burton on trent to Somerset from picking it up returned high 40's mpg sitting at 70mph.
Handles quite well for a car of its size too.
