Looking at ideas for the next family wagon.

Need the usual space for a family of 4 etc.. No need for 3rd row.

The value for money I see in this bracket seems high, yes also comes with fears of bills etc... So..

X5, GLE, A7, XC90... what else should I consider?

All roughly come in around the same price for a 3-5 year old. Generally out of warranty, but could always add one.

Not worried about the cost or daily running costs (MPG).. more interested in the one that won't leave the wife stranded or the car in and out of the shop every few weeks with niggles.

So really.. which one is most reliable at this age?

Have you considered the Lexus RX450h? Reliable car which should fit the bill.

I think if Lexus put a few non hybrid engines and a good sized boot on that it would do really well in the UK.

I just cannot see beyond that hybrid engine sadly.

Great call on the Lexus, thanks for that suggestion.

New shape VW Touareg's are very good.

I was surprised how good the RX450h was. But the VW seemed bigger.

XC 90 are ok. Let down by small engines.
X5 just seem like a fat and worse version a 5 series estate .

+1. Admittedly, mine is ancient (20 years old) and probably has little in common to one that's 3-5 years old, but I still think it's amazing - and I've owned it 10 years. It's a car I rarely need anymore - still can't bring myself to sell it.

Do you actually need any SUV qualities? i.e. towing, or off-road capability? If so and the budget will stretch to one then a Land Cruiser Invincible can't really be beaten. Rock solid, excellent residuals, and absolutely no chance of leaving the wife stranded.

Genesis GV70.

The oldest are 2 years old, but might be worth a look. They come with a 5 year manufacturer's warranty & free servicing from new.

Edited to add, possibly a GV80 is the above is too small.

we were in a similar position... i short listed a X5 and Maserati Levante...

we got the levante and for a SUV, its pretty good, misses some of the features and solidity of the german options, but get a petrol one and the exhaust note makes up for a lot!

apparently reliability is pretty good and they are quite spacious although the boot is not as practical given the sloped tailgate.

Do you need something as a big as an XC90? (7 seater) I'm a Volvo fan and test drove most recent version of the XC90 but ended up with a XC60 as didn't really need the extra space for day to day driving plus despite the face lifts the current model has been around for a while.

I like the look of the Maserati if I wasn't as bothered about running costs and big bills......

I'll be in a similar boat looking for a replacement for our XC60 in the next 12 months. The Lexus has been recommended but not sure I'd have one over another XC60.

This is the answer. You also get a seven seater 'L' model which in my opinion looks a little better.

To be honest you don't even need to stick to 3 to 5 year old with Lexus. If you get it serviced by them it's warranted up to 10 years and 100k miles. I've had mine 4 years and is now over both 10 years old and a 100k but still running great.

Depends what you want from a car. Sporty it is not but relaxing, reliable and reasonably quick it is.

What I did find though was that main dealer prices down South were steep so I went up North for mine and it was a considerably better deal.

Lexus RX or NX for reliability. ALFA Stelvio or Maserati Levante for driving pleasure. Or Porsche Macan or Cayenne for a combination of the two.

Recent BMWs score awfully low in reliability surveys.

RX450h owner here. It's a great car. Nothing wrong with the hybrid drivetrain. Lexus extends th warranty up to 10years if you get the vehicle serviced by them.

I believe the keyword in the OP was ‘reliable’ which has to be the Lexus despite most of the other options mentioned might be more fun to drive.

What does your usage look like OP?

I ask as we’ve run an Audi Etron 55 for the past 18 months and if you can charge at home and don’t do 200+ mile trips they’re a great price of kit.

With the arse end falling out of the EV market in the past 6 months and them being very low maintenance could be worth considering if it fits your needs.

Mercedes GLE 400d would be my pick:

Followed by the RX450h if you're doing more short journeys.
