Its a running joke in our family that if we're stuck in a queue of slow moving cars, there will be a VW camper at the front!
Personally they're not my cup of tea but plenty of people have given me small fortunes to repair/ restore them so I guess if you buy the right one you'll at least recoup your initial investment.
Never ever buy a cheap one thinking you can spend a bit and make it into a nice one, always buy one somebody else has restored!
You're not Paul Baker are you? The welder?

Mazda Bongo.
I sold mine earlier this year after 5 trouble free years. You'll get a decent one for £5K.
Only sold ours as we had outgrown it.
It was cheap to run (v6 fuel economy aside), cheap to service and cheap to insure.
I like the look / image of Volkswagens, I don't like spending my holidays on hard shoulders.
If I was looking now I'd be sorely tempted by a 4WD Toyota Delica (sp?).

Wow. Thanks for all the responses! Now I'm completely confused.

I was under the impression we were after something that could cover decent distances (Spain, France and even as far as Italy) but doesn't seem like that is the T2!

Hmm...maybe we need a motor home or maybe I should go to some VW shows

Bus fest, Malvern Showground this weekend. It's a great day out if nothing else (expect traffic)

Do it, be amazed at just how silly some fully grown adults can be when it comes to what is essentially a van.

Personally I think that they're really naff and usually driven by middle aged cement salesmen from Droitwich, who because they've bought a lei of plastic flowers and some Billabong shorts from a designer outlet village, suddenly think that they're one of the Beach Boys.

First thing we did with ours was take out all the "Life's a beach", and "surfs up", and "one life live it" window stickers and paraphernalia and get it back to something close to how VW made it....

I know the feeling. Ive been tasked with picking up a cheap one for my mum in a few years. My aunt (her sister) just bought a big new-ish one for some extortionate price for her retirement. Mum absolutely loves it, she cant even drive she wants one that myself or one of my cousins/uncles can move around for her every 6 months or so (but thinks caravans are ugly and doesnt want a static since she would like to move around... without being able to move it herself anyway rolleyes ). But my god the market is confusing, some of them depreciate like stones others seem to hold there 'new-ish' value for 10 years. They are all based on pretty simple van bodies but some have custom boxes on the back, some are full coachbody builds.

I know my way around cheap vans but my god when you add a bed and a sink to them its a completely different market. From what ive been looking at self builds on LWB hightop vans seem like the best value for money.

Someone came in to work with a Talbot motor home type thing.

Looked more like what I would like. Even had a shower and sink as well as the usuals!

Did a quick search and the ones on ebay are mainly going for upwards of 2.5k anyone know what they are like or own one?

It's bloody frustrating.

My wife, myself and both children surf and love our VW T4. We've got a pop top, sun shade and the front seats spin round. In the back there's a RnR bed. No furniture. We rock up, throw the top, get a stove out and essentially treat the van like a tent, with the ability to carry 2 paddleboards, 1 surfboard and 4 bodyboards!

We got ours (moved from a tent) then within a year, half my friends have gone and bought fancy T5s for prices upwards of £40k started wearing Billabong and O'Neil clothes and think they're surfers.

We went to a weekend camp with them and they started popping out the bloody crystal and denby, heating up a casserole in their oven whilst wife and I sat with our sporks waiting for whisltling willy to boil so we could have a pot noodle. The BBQ the next night was just as ridiculous.....GAS!!!

It's another Chelsea Tractor phase IMO.
