Found them a little clinical, and lacking torque, i.e. needed ringing out to get the best out of the engine and well they suffer the same issues that most 6 cyl porsches do of that era..
Isn't this the very reason given by many on PH that N/A Petrols are better than Turbo and or diesel etc?

It's funny when you see it being used as negative.

It's a matter of taste and priorities. And of whether the thing feels as though it likes being revved out, we used to have an MX-5 which needed all the revs but felt and sounded coarse and unpleasant at the top end.

Also a matter of performance, in that something which is very quick if thrashed and pretty quick if not is less of an issue than something which needs thrashing to be brisk.

Was going to suggest the e36 m3. No driver aids, lovely engine, will keep it's value.

e46 a good call but there are several BIG issues, the main one being the rear subframe mounts that WILL crack and need to be reinforced (1.5-2K job)

Lol, it's more like £500 if you go to someone reasonable! Easy job to do yourself if you can weld and don't mind dropping rear subframe. You can buy the plate kit for ~£100 ish.

These are just examples of cars out there.

If any were of interest I am sure you could look harder for a specific model or example cheaper.

Mitsubishi EVO VI GSR

59,000 miles

£14,490

This is expensive but it could be a UK car instead of an import but don't quote me as I am not sure.

Clio 200 with the engine from the Megane

Quite a common conversion with OEM reliability.

You could get a very decent one for that money.
Coming from a tts he would it put it in a ditch within 60 days : hehe:

That is a little harsh, but they do like to keep you awake every now and then.

You've mentioned a good Z4M being out of your range, what about a Z4 Coupe? 3.0Si? Should be have enough poke and if you turn the traction fully off, its pretty barebones.

Its no Elise in terms of "raw driveability", but probably worth consideration. Absolutely loved mine, biggest regret selling it.

I'm in a very similar dilemma, having recently sold my 118d coupe and looking to sell my passat.

I posted in the BMW forum, and the response was E36 M3 or stretch to a E92 M3 at 18k

12 grand would get you a bike license and the best part of 200mph. If you genuinely are after pure, unadulterated "FUN", four is too many wheels. wink

Genuine question but what proportion of PH do you think might be capable of such a tinkering?
1-2% or more like 20%?
Just wondering how lame my spannering capability is because "if you can weld" isn't something I come across that often.

Great cars, aren't they? Even the tiny fuel tanks and erratic fuel gauges aren't without their charms. :-) 100% the best 4WD cars I've driven.

Cars worth about 12k. So I want a similarly powered car, I can trade against that's fun, fast, no compromises (like the excessive ESP / driver aids on the audi)..

I'm thinking a megan 250, but they look huge?! Clio 200? Nothing vw because we know theyre all bit dull. Could I get a low ish milage e46 m3 for that kinda money?
Surely you must have established that when you test drove the TTS, but you bought it anyway?

It is only when you are pushing a car you get to feel the real issues when it comes to the TTS or any car for that matter.

You can't do this on a test drive especially now the salesman prefers to sit alongside.

The TTS is not a bad car at all. It is just when you have owned more focused cars in the past it shows up the TTS weaknesses.

I thought maybe like half?!
I can't weld for st, but I don't mind pulling subframes and doing bushes etc. And I'm useless as heck!

Yeah that's true. The last time I test drove a car with a salesman next to me was a Civic Type R, and he encouraged me to thrash it everywhere. Otherwise they let me take it out on my own usually.
Agreed, I don't find TT/Golf platform too horrendous to be honest. It's certainly not an 8/10ths and beyond car, but up to that point they're a pretty good steer.
