This might not sound "premium" but don't discount the new Peugeot 5008 SUV which I think looks great and has loads of space. Depreciation might be "interesting" but you'll get the absolute top-spec with your budget.

Disco 4 with leather is the pick of the bunch. Best all rounder and a excellent drive. Heavy car.

Next I would consider a new XC90 as these are the best family type SUV's

3rd Touareg, unassuming, well built and handsome and IMO better than its sisters the Q7 and Cayenne

Dog & Kids most days. Will look to divide the boot into dog side and pram side...

Im not looking for it to be flash - it just happens to be that the very largest 4X4s are from more Premium brands (X5, Q7, Discoveries, RR's etc). If Ford or Vauxhall made a car to properly compete with the X5 or Discovery 5 then Id consider it - but all of these so called SUV's nowadays are simply Hatchback chassis's with a chunky body and an extra 50mm ground clearance!

Touareg is on the list as coming out good value now and lots of of options (massive lease deals on these a couple years ago will help)...

Will look at this Kodiaq thing as been mentioned a couple times...
I get your point don't worry, there are a shortage of big cars by the non premium brands - although there is the big kia thing - sorento? - but not sure if big enough, same with its sister the hyundai Santa Fe - rubbish name but not bad, had a petrol one in america - only other I would probably look at would be pug 3008 or 5008 - although not sure of underpinnings.

I guess it depends used or new, 3008 and 5008 should be fairly easy to get below 30k for top spec models. Although these cars will be slower than the excellant 30d engines in the toureg and x5 etc so will probably not give you the speed factor you need.

We have the same debate, and whichever direction we try to go in, it always ends up in the same position, An X5.

F15 3.0D and be done with it
This is my gut Charlie. I had a X5 40d courtesy car for a week a year or two ago and it was brilliant. Silly quick for a tank and all the space we ever needed, need to try a 3.0d.
I've heard of families getting rid of X5 as the ride was unbearable.

Note that Touareg is about to be replaced.

People keep mentioning Skoda Kodiaq, but there's the Tiguan Allspace now which I'm sure many people find more palatable on the badge front.

Don't get me wrong, I tried to get a Jeep GC in the Mangoletsi £199/mth scam deal, but if you have one, you need to live close to a good dealer!

All of the global manufacturers have big SUVs in the US, they just don't sell them here. Something like a GMC Acadia (they recently made it smaller) would be ideal and they're about £25K.

Reading between the lines I suspect the badge in the front will be the deciding factor.

The new XC90 is every bit as well put together as the other cars mentioned and I think looks far better both inside and out. It will be my choice of new car next year.

The badge is a part of it, when is it not? But the main factors will be the price, size and the drive - for us a used X5 or Disco fits the bill.

Everybody raves about the XC90 and whilst its a nice car I just dont get it - but it would be boring if we were all the same.
