The flip side is there are loads of people tracking 172/182's , driving them there and back without the gear box packing up .
I had a 172 cup and it was a right laugh on a b road which was good because i lived on exmoor , however if you planned on using it just to pootle about a roads and dual carriageways i think you might get a bit tired of the harsh ride , well worth trying one 1st to see what you think.
If you want more room and fast then the default pistonheads answer is saab aero
Yeah dunno if I got unlucky, but the first gearbox exploded 4 weeks after a Renault Sport trackday at Bedford. The second time I managed to blow a hole in the side of the gearbox, about 6 weeks after a trackday at Donnington. Luckily, the 2nd gearbox was replaced FOC under warranty. I replaced that car with a 306 GTi-6, which I had 8 years, did numerous trackdays in, loads of Ring trips and never once managed to destroy the box or clutch. For fun, a 172 Cup is hard to beat. For fun + daily + family, it's not a good choice imo. A Golf GTi or Focus ST are both better all rounders just because they are more refined and have much more room inside, plus are a lot safer in the event of a crash.
Seems easier to sell idea of a TT than a Clio to the other half but I’m not convinced how fun one will be. Can anybody confirm info about the TT suspension please? Have read they come with standard, sport or adaptive and it seems most on sale via various classifieds are not the s lines with sport suspension so presumably have the standard suspension. Can anybody advise how soft the standard suspension is? Is it comparable to the standard golf suspension for example or is it even softer? If it’s softer I’m not convinced it will be much of a sporty drive at all.
I've been running a Clio 200 Cup (with recaros) for 6 months now as my main child (under 2 year old) carrying car.
The only thing to look out for is the doors are long, so it can be tricky getting child in and out the back when someone parks millimeters away from passenger door. Overall its absolutely fine for child carrying duties and is a fantastic handling, revvy car with immense chassis.
Interesting comments above re 325ti's as I had one too (took baby home from the hospital in the back of it!) which was just as usable as a baby carrying vehicle. I really loved that car, engines are a peach, but nowhere near as good as the 200 for a b road blast
