I've no idea how you can only average 36mpg out of one of these "just being normal".

Our lass is on here second 1.0 100bhp Fiesta and despite a garbage commute (2 hours daily for just 40 miles) she's still managed high 40's average from both. Record out of the current (6 speed) one was an (indicated) 62mpg over 500 or so miles so they can be frugal if you really try.

50mpg isn't too difficult with normal driving.
I paid attention this morning on the commute. Mk7.5 125bhp. I reset the dash avg mpg before leaving and it was 27.5mpg when I got to work. About 7 miles total, cold engine to start, up to temp about half way, some town driving, 2 mins of a queue at a roundabout (I didn't use stop start, it was more first gear queuing) and then a bit of dual carriageway. It was in the 40s mpg until the dual carriageway when the acceleration up to 70 trashed the average completely down to 20 something then didn't recover. I wasn't exactly red-lining it, just getting up to speed. Maybe 3500-4000rpm changes. Live average at 70mph (indicated, so more like 67mph) was 34-37mpg depending on hills.

I also paid attention to gearing. A 6 speed box would definitely help; the gearing on the 5-speed is a bit off for optimum economy and could do with some half-ratios. It's a great box for proper driving though, so I'm not complaining.

Obviously we all have different commutes, but 50mpg is a distant dream, even on a gentle run.

Just don't get an auto Fiesta, I had a STline with the paddle shifting twin clutch box for a day as a rental, it was slower to respond to the manual inputs than the 4 speed slusher in the Hyundia i20.
Good advice. The only auto available in the Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost is the 'Powershift'. It's a dual-clutch auto rather than a proper torque converter and it's absolute garbage.

Thanks for all the advice guys. So it's safe to say that it's still a great little engine after the coolant pipe issue. I have my eye on a 125ps and a 140ps st-line. I just don't want to buy a lemon or to find it has extra engine damage after the recall.

The coolant pipe issue only affected the early Focus, it was resolved by the time the Fiesta got the engine.

Had a 2014 Fabia MonteCarlo Black edition in the family for 3 years with the 1.2 tsi 102ps

Cracking car, lovely engine, a bit torquier in feel compared to the 100 fiesta, you will find you want a 6th gear if you do a lot of motorway/fast dual carriageway etc. More grown up interior than the fez

Fez just drives brilliantly, much more sparkle to the chassis even in basic spec. hate the dashboard and interior though.

If you can stretch to the newer fabia, the do a 110ps 1.0 3cyl with a 6 speed box in the Monte Carlo and its a super little car, again lacking the sparkle of the fiesta but then the wife doesnt really notice that kind of thing anyway and a very nice interior. Both the fabia ride best on the standard wheels, the optional bigger ones make it very crashy.
