I'd say the Passat is very much dependent upon spec and year; I had a brand new 2012 Sport and it was a horrible thing for long drives. Guaranteed backache, which I've never suffered in any car before or since! A colleague had a slightly newer (but same shape) Passat Highline and never had any problem.
For the record mine was the 2006 S spec, thanks to the tight arse who specced it and then left the company. windy up rear windows indeed.Edited by talksthetorque on Tuesday 25th December 21:06
Jaguar X350 XJ? I bought one for buttons recently, very impressed with the comfort of the seats, and they are very reliable. Good efficiency too, 30mpg+ on a run even from a 4.2
Anyone suggesting a mid sized exec or something like a Saab or Volvo S60 has clearly not tried the large luxury cars like the LS/S-Class/7 series etc. There is a big leap in refinement and drop in noise, which makes journeys much less fatiguing.

ultimate comfort, quietness, refinement, reliability has to be a Lexus LS 400 or LS 430. A billion dollars spent on development in the 1990s tells you all you need to know about these cars (60 engineers working full time on noise, vibration, harshness reduction alone), and possibly the most reliable engine ever made
