£50k ish - used i8 or new m240i
Discussion
lots of good points here. Like a few of you I was initially thinking the 240 would be my choice but now im leaning towards the i8. I do like the 991 911 but as someone mentioned im not going to be able to get one with manufacturer warranty on there and on a decent pcp.
good point about the tech though, there's nothing i would ache after really in the i8 when I think about it. as long as it has 360 cameras so I don't mash the wheels that would be fine.
The M2 Comp is a good shout but there are already 3 of them near me I see daily so wanted something a bit different.
I'm thinking if I put the money into an i8 and it does disappoint then I'd be in a better place to sell it on down the line to get a 240 or something else rather than losing a shed load in the initial 240 depreciation

I hope OP will look back longingly at that i8, because then they'd realise they've left the bloody doors open! I think the i8 will definitely feel much more special than the M240i, but you definitely need to get a good test drive in one, they do seem to be a tad marmite and can leave some people underwhelmed. Not sure I'd be bothered by the tech being dated, that generation of iDrive still feels pretty modern to me and a CarPlay retrofit will bring it right into 2022. What might be a dealbreaker is the rear seats- I'm not sure how good they'd be even for a 4 year old (especially as they grow!), particularly with a car seat factored in- it's very much a 2+2 from the limited time I've spent poking around one.
Although if you're bothered by the M2 Comp being common then I'd be wary of the fact that in 12-24 month's time you'll probably be seeing a lot more than 3 M240i's around. I'm guessing a nicely specced F82 M4 would have the same issue as the M2? If you can find one in an interesting colour (if that's your sort of thing) that could go someway to making it feel a bit rarer.

i've had my i8 coupe as a daily for three years now. Still love it. Nothing under £100k that personally interests me as much. Sure, there are better cars, but not that interest me. It's simply a nice thing.
Downsides -
really have to think where you park it for door access
rear seats for bags or toddlers only
people who have not driven them love to criticise them ( same goes for all cars?)
Eats rear tyres like no car i've owned.

The doors were definitely the downside for me, the wife would only wear trousers when we went out in it... and on occasions some tt would park that close to it I couldn't get in it.... too much drama for a daily after the novility wore off...Downsides -

Was walking round this afternoon, pushing the pram trying to get the baby asleep. Had to stop for a minute as a beautiful black i8 was pulling out from a side road. Think it was a roadster/convertible. Absolutely gorgeous thing to look at. Made me think of this thread. I'll be honest, an m240i wouldn't have left the same impression. Even though it's a decent car.
If you're pushing your budget to get a £50k car then the M240i is the safer bet. An older i8 has the potential to throw up large bills being an older car. Unless you can get a BMW approved warranty I'd be concerned.
Cars are going up in price, but a M240i for £50k sounds really expensive.

100% agree. Warranty is a must. Mine's been really reliable, but wouldn't risk without warranty at it'd absolutely have to go to bmw for any issues.Cars are going up in price, but a M240i for £50k sounds really expensive.

Yes same here but that doesn't bother me. It's always going to be the issue with great cars, people buy them, and often for the driving experience. I can safely say it'll be more than 3, so I'd say fo for the i8 or M2 Competition.

Out of interest, what size wheels/tyres are you running on yours? I imagine the smaller wheels with particularly skinny tyres really would struggle?Downsides -

Any bills will be offset by the lack of depreciation in comparison I'd suggest, and the lower running costs. As mentioned the OP can definitely get an approved car with BMW warranty in budget anyway. Cars are going up in price, but a M240i for £50k sounds really expensive.

In comparison to the competition they're actually quite aggressively priced, particularly at £43k after discount or close to £40k on the armed forces / NHS / etc scheme if you qualify.Either way there is no real need to spend £50k on one.

i currently work through an agency for the NHS. what sort of discounts are we talking?Either way there is no real need to spend £50k on one.
I agree the M2C comments, it's a fantastic car so no surprise that it's popular. I'll go for a test drive if there's one available nearby.
The rear seats I think I'm prepared for. I had a gt86 a while back which were pretty much non existent. We also have an SUV for family journeys so it would only really be used either solely by me or on the occasion we want to cram ourselves in!
I agree regarding warranty, I'm budgeting £1500 ish per year for extended warranty which I could hopefully continue for as long as I keep it.

If you refer to the rear seats of the M2, it is a proper 4 seater. Rear pax will have the same space as in a 1 series. I am 6ft and can seat behind myself very comfortably and with spare knee room. Extending the warranty full comp with £0 excess will be £1,200 or so. The rear seats I think I'm prepared for. I had a gt86 a while back which were pretty much non existent. ^^13%
Would you care to show a link to this 13% discount available on a New BMW two series..? My sister in law works for the NHS and has done for many years as a pediatrician, and is aware of certain car manufacturers discounts but she can't remember seeing 13%..? And never on BMW'S...You give the impression that 13% discount is now readily available on a New M240i..! Not true..! And even If it was when would you get it..? 2025...!

Not sure what you are asking me if you know it's not true. Weird. remember seeing 13%..? And never on BMW'S...You give the impression that 13% discount is now readily available on a New M240i..! Not true..! And even If it was when would you get it..? 2025...!
Anyway it's been reported on the other M240i thread a few weeks ago. I then I asked my friend in the NHS to test it and yes it was there. That was last month. Really low compared to what it used to be a couple of years ago on BMWs, even Ms.
I don't know if still live but perhaps Mirinjabro can tell us.
Edit. Actually it was in Nov 21, time flies! https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
People report £2,500k dealer discount (not on the forces scheme) on babybmw so still a good £7k under the £50k mark.
