Gen 8 Accord 2.4 was going to be my suggestion as well with it's nuclear proof engine (could be handy at the moment haha). Avoid auto at all costs though. Road tax could be quite high.
Interesting, what's wrong with the auto boxes?
Just not very good from my experience due to the lack of forced induction. Motorway driving was not pleasurable due to always kicking down to maintain speed. Probably doesn't help that I'm used to ZF and DSG.

Thanks eleveneleven, some good things to check there.

Also looking at the Mazda6 2.5. Anyone have any idea's on these ?
I have a 2008 Mazda 6 2.5

The rust was more the previous generation. Mine is a bit rusty underneath but not on the panels.
170BHP so not that quick but does drive nicely and goes well enough. Handles quite well for its size.
Very smooth and quiet at lower revs.
Sounds quite nice when pressing on.
I get around 35mpg day to day. 40+ on a run

Had it for around 5 Years. Now on 120K
No big problems. Calipers and sticking slide pins. A few minor suspension parts replaced.
Overheating was diagnosed by indy as head gasket. Turned out to be the thermostat.
The Bose amp can fail. Had mine repaired for around £200

Thanks for that. Nearly got a 2012 Mondeo Estate but just didn't do it for me visually however I'm seriously considering the 6 now, either in estate or hatch form. It is a nice looking motor and not too bothered about the performance but those MPG figures look good to me. Is there anything to be concerned about when over 100k miles ?

Nothing to worry about in my experience or from what I have read about the petrols.
Chain driven engines. The 2.0 and 1.8 are supposed to be OK and would give an auto option.
The boot on the hatch is very decent.
From what I have read avoid the diesels. That said, plenty for sale at higher miles but some known problems with them.

The tech is a little dated.
I have BT but only for phone. Possibly streaming available on the 2010 facelift. Another member on here fitted an Android unit that is Mazda specific.
Bose audio is good. Have a BT to Phono for when we travel and want to stream.
Big car and no parking sensors. Possibly do have on the estate and again maybe on facelift.
Auto lights, wipers and climate all work well.

Actually, a few minor electrical niggles
False alarms. Tracked down to a rear door and shorted the switch.
Door request switches fail. Button on the handle to lock the doors from outside. Mazda £600 for body coloured handle assy. Got a new switch for £40 just need to fit at some point.
Recirc motor/flap assy doesn't know it is home and machine guns for 5-10 secs when I start the car and it switches from recirc to outside air.
