Wow...Op here,
I wasn't expecting this flaming.
What I simply wanted to find out...was, is there a more economical car to make swift motorway progress than my current c320 CDI.

As you're getting 40mpg out of the current car, "swift progress" can't actually be that swift so the answer is "yes, plenty". If you were making swift progress of the kind which can lose your licence your current economy would be down in the mid 20s.I wasn't expecting this flaming.

It's possible to cruise comfortably at normal motorway speeds in pretty much any car available today, even something like an Aygo is perfectly fast enough, just a bit loud so you have to turn the stereo up a bit.
You'd get 60mpg plus out of that Aygo, something similar out of a Prius or Ioniq, a little bit less out of a car with a 2.0 diesel. 45 to 50mpg is possible in a modern normal petrol in something Focus/Golf sized. So, yes basically any normal car would do the job more economically, provided you don't buy something huge, high performance, or a SUV with the aerodynamics of a house brick.

The Focus Ecoboost that I had wouldn't do that even if you towed it It's possible to cruise comfortably at normal motorway speeds in pretty much any car available today, even something like an Aygo is perfectly fast enough, just a bit loud so you have to turn the stereo up a bit.

not sure the OP could possibly be seen in the top lane in something so ordinary as an Aygo or, god forbid, a Prius. “top lane”…?
This is exactly the kind of ???? phrase I’ve come to expect from folk who own a “premium” car brand and then expect to live in the outside lane just because of the badge.
It’s so depressing how self conscious we are in the UK. Just drive what you want, literally no one you drive past will care.
