"This is the answer. The 3.2 petrol (Golf R32 engine) mk1 Touareg is borderline indestructible."

Although 40mpg won't be on the cards. For the towing then the low down torque of a diesel would suit better would it not? Although is there any issue or need to go near any low emission locations as the cars will all be Euro 5's.

Low emission zones not a problem. Touareg terrifies me, needs to be something robust and reliable (yes I did shortlist the L322, I am aware hehe)

I tow a lot with an ‘08 S211 (estate version of the W211) E220 manual. Mine is allowed to tow 1,900kg, moves up to 2,100kg with the autobox.

I am always towing right on that limit, and have done quite a few miles round airfields towing more like 2,700kg.

Car handles it superbly as long as the trailer is loaded sensibly with a good nose weight. You can tell the cooling system is working hard on long hills with the air on blowing nice and cold, but everything else is engineered way in excess of what you need.

Martin.
Have you run up to speed heavily loaded to know how the stability is? And I assume it’s solid towing up to its limit?

One of the guys on the Duster thread uses his to tow classic cars on a trailer.

40mpg and more with a petrol, a lot more with a diesel.

I use mine to go up and down the country and find it surpringly comfy for a car that cost me £10k brand new.

Worth a look at somewhere like this -

https://www.thetowcarawards.com/winners/2010/
https://www.thetowcarawards.com/winners/2011/
https://www.thetowcarawards.com/winners/2012/

You'll get the pattern of the urls smile

But looking at previous tow car award winners might be interesting reading. The XF for example wasn't one I'd have thought of.

The Touareg is VERY reliable.

You're looking at high 20s on a run, but you'll offset that against the risk of buying a diesel (turbos, DPF, EGR etc.).

The problem with most of those awards is that they go to cars that can't tow 2T, let alone the 2.3T that the OP needs.

That alone narrows down to SUVs, unless I'm mistaken. With £5k, I would not be buying a diesel SUV.

The Duster's tow capacity is 800kg short of what the OP needs.

I had a similar issue but could get away with a tow capacity of 2T, for this the E61 (even the 2K shed I bought) was ideal and until the turbo went I couldn't fault it.

Hunting fro it's replacement I decided to find something that would have a tow capacity that would allow for an enclosed trailer, and couldn't find much at all would tow over 2t other than some vans or a 4x4.

Started off looking at around you budget, then upped it a bit to get something a bit newer, then realised that this was pushing me into 06-09 4x4's which in a lot of cases was £55 a month in road tax. Ended up having to up the budget again to just over £9k and bought a 82k mile 2012 X5 3.0d. It's not going to hit your 40mpg, it's averaging 29-30 at the moment on a cross country commute which isn't too bad.

That's a good point. The first generation X5 3.0d can tow 2.7T I believe. It's basically a jacked up E39, so parts are cheap and common issues are well known.

You still might only see mid 30s on a run, but it's the closest you'll get from an SUV.

Ah well, only answered as I believe he towed a trailer with an E-type.

I'll get my coat.

I think the Hyundai Santa Fe can tow 2.5 tonn. Should be reliable, available in budget and might get close to 40mpg when not towing.
