I need a strong 4x4, something that is rated to tow 3500kg safely for towing heavuy trailers laden with machinery. It also needs to be no more expensive than 5k. I have it largely narrowed down to a 97 til 00 Nissan Patrol TD6 enigine (I hear the newer 3.0Di 4 cycliner enegines are weak). First of all, is there anything I need to look out for on these particular models?

Also, is there any other suggestions?
Make sure that what you buy has PERMANENT 4WD. Very old Series are 2WD on tarmac as is the Shogun and Pajero.

Allegedly some of the expensive continental four wheel drives will allow you to go from Low Ratio to High Ratio on the move. This sounds brilliant as with a really heavy trailer at the bottom of a hill its a case of driving off in Low and having to stop at the brow of the hill in order to change into High Ratio. £s£s£s I fear.

If one has a spare £82,000 there is always the new Mercedes G Wagen!

I suspect any decent 4x4 or pickup would do the trick.
The jap pick-ups look pretty but they have significantly less towing ability than Land Rovers. The Navara can only tow 2600kg, the new Hilux a paltry 2250kg and the Mitsubishi L200 2700kg.
depends on which version, they go from 2,600Kg's to 3,000Kg's

Hi guys

Sorry to dig up this old thread - but fascinating stuff, and I have the same issue of looking for a cheap 3500kg4x4 tower.

And again - the important part is small budget!

Nobody here has mentioned the Jeep Grand Cherokee??!!? I believe this is 3500kg tow weight, and also they are cheap now (£1,000 for something half decent, £1,500 for decent). Plus high level of luxury (well, leather seats!)

What's the thoughts on the Grand Cherokee??

Any other models sub £2,000 that spring to mind?

old ones are OK, newer ones will not stand up to that.

by old, I mean up to this shape:

10 years later this thread is still relevant.

The offerings from car manufactures has some what narrowed in terms of gross train weight (GTW).
Category BE is back on the liecnce for those who passed from 1 January 1997, now allowing to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM.

ULEZ compliant Euro6 is now a criteria for some moving forward.

What would you pick from that 2016 2017 2018 bracket with 12k budget? commercial or passenger.

Don’t forget that if you go the pick up route many are restricted to a 50 mph speed limit on A roads

3.5T on a tri-axle or 3.1T on a dual.

You're not wrong, but the chances of you being caught exceeding that are also very small.

However, if you're caught by a camera van, they can cross reference with the DVLA. IIRC it's only the L200, Izuzu Dmax and base versions of the Hilux and Ranger that are under the 2040kg ULW that can do 60 SC and 70 DC.
