Sorry, didnt mean to open it. Its just thought was helpful to show in at least some cases, you are liable for the gap on car itself. Initial payments & remaining payments aside.

Did someone attack your car with a giant magnet?

scotnoob said:
Just confirmed on the phone that they mean traditional gap and that i will be liable for difference in value of car and the insurance value.

Very suprised of this with a lease and not sure i want to sign now.
Why wouldnt the value of the car be the same as the insurance value?
If it isnt - take the insurer to the ombudsman
However if youre worried about it, pay some cash to a reputable GAP specialist and cover your upfront payment too

Sorry i mean value of the car different from the remaining finance.

Finance obviously doesnt always keep up with value ie negative equity.

Up to you
It'll be their book value, the insurer can't pay them to profit from the loss.
If anyone has found where the insurer hasn't settled fully with the lease co. please post it up
A few people have complained about loss of initial payment but that's a different issue

gap insurers give you an option to increase initial rental cover.

The GAP cover in this instance paid back to me the initial payment
Hi Tyrrell, that looks nasty, hope you weren't injured.

Can I ask - aside from your GAP cover refunding your initial payment - did the lease company ever suggest the insurance payout didn't cover the value of the vehicle, or did the lease company ever ask you to continue paying any future monthly rentals?

Many thanks

This seems to be the critical point in the whole gap debate now.

It appears from actual experiences on here that no-one has been required to pay some form of penalty (i.e. remaining rentals or finance shortfalls) when their lease car has been written off. However Initial Rental Cover provided by gap specialists has proved useful to a few people in recovering the upfront payment - for which at least one person paid around £30 and got £2000 returned, which seems to make it a good investment.

Yes all fine thank you, car was on a cheeky deal through a thread on PH, car was leased through VWFS they are not fussed what you do as long as its insured, the car was 1 year and 3 weeks old when this happened Admiral paid out what was owed to VWFS in a matter of days so no shortfall on my part.

However fully comp won't pay out the initial rental in this case £1500, because the car was written off and insurance paid out I had to fund a hire car for a few months until the Golf R arrived again on a cheeky deal through a thread on PH.

You will also have to pay more for your insurance going forward as you have suffered a total loss, I also had to do a driver training day at £184 plus a day off work, there are also all the hassle and inconvenience of sorting this sort of stuff out as well.

Golf R is also with VWFS and again they don't care who its insured through as long as its fully comp, I love leasing you save so much money compared to PCP deals in general, just need to protect yourself financially in the event it goes wrong.

Why did you have to complete a 'driver training day' if you don't mind me asking?

I have been keeping an eye on Ateca deals as would want one to replace our Leon Cupra, was going to wait until next year but the following deal piqued my interest

https://leasing.com/main-dealers/stoneacre-seat-ch...

Seems quite a well-specced car so thought it may be worth posting as just sneaks under 25% - not an amazing deal but given the current landscape may be of use to someone else!

I think they may be September-registration only and although it is Stoneacre I have posted there are other dealers offering similar.

How can someone pay £30 for initial rental. Someone has been telling a porkie pie. Surely the gap insurance will ask for proof of the inital rental and pay out according. Like i mentioned earlier. This is just an option to increase it so in the case of a write off you can be sure the remaining shortfall is covered and you can take a new lease deal with whatever initial rental you put down before

I think somebody paid £30 for insurance, and received £2k back.

GAP insurance? Get in the F***ing sea. This thread is for lease deals.

Good deal on a Mini Cooper S JCW. Might be a misprice, but plenty of others on contracthireandleasing not much more.

https://leasing.com/independent-brokers/lime-leasi...

3+35 8k miles £239.26, £238 fee.

I believe you are correct Saaby93. Insurers will pay the book value of the asset insured. The leasing company are only entitled to the book value of the asset they have 'lost'. So there should be no gap and therefore no need for gap insurance. If there is ever a gap then the lease company reserve the right to come after you for the difference. But this should never happen and as far as I can see nobody has posted an example of the insurer and lease company not agreeing on a settlement figure for the asset.

The additional option gap insurers offer to allow you to insure against the 'loss' of the initial payment is something different and this may be useful if you're on a 12+x or 9+x, but probably not if you're on a 1+x.

Hmm. It's £270 per month cheaper than the next cheapest car, and doesn't exist on their website. I'd be amazed if it really existed.
