What I would say to the OP is - choose the new car yourself! I.e. don't let them choose one.
Similar situation with a friend (but nothing like as criminal) and the VW dealer offered to upgrade his Passat due their own mistake on the sale, and they chose one for him, wouldn't let him see it until delivered, and he'd already paid a small amount extra - turned out to be in poorer condition (despite being a higher spec) and obviously from a tobacco owner.
How did he deal with that, did he send it back? Sounded dodgy, as soon as you said that they wouldn't let him see it...
Unfortunately he gave in and kept it, they'd worn him down.

That's incredible, especially when VW Dealers try to present themselves as a cut above the rest.

One bought an Approved Used Lexus. Advertised with adaptive cruise control. It didn’t have it. It was £2k-£3k option.

Mistakes happen. It's how they're dealt with that I pay attention to. Some of the things that I've read on here, are simply beyond belief.

In all my years of buying, selling, repairing cars, the VW/Audi dealers have been the worst, by far.

Skoda have been amongst the best, along with Ford dealers.

Lately I'm finding BMW dealers have gone on the defensive about issues, rather than wanting to sort them, they never used to be like that.

From the complaints that I've read, it seems that the quality of their cars has also gone downhill.

Absolutely yes.

I could write you pages of poor experiences of more recent VW/Audi experiences, some of which are hilarious. I've lost count of the times I've said "I cant believe you just said that to me"

15 years ago they were a good product, I sold hundreds of Passats from the 2002 2006 era, before the elec handbrake models, with very, very, few problems. The last two personal cars I've had from them have had issues that the dealer wouldnt acknowledge.

Its like they're now always on the defensive when it comes to warranty repairs.

Interesting timing. I was considering a fairly new Superb as a replacement for my current Mondeo Titanium (my 4th Mondeo) I think that I'll keep it a little longer...

After our low mileage ~5 year old Golf we'd had for 8 months threw a £1000 bill at its MOT (thankfully covered under the dealers warranty) without a single warning light, code or way anyone would have spotted in any kind of reasonable inspection I'd certainly be wary of taking on another VAG over the Mondeo.

Yes, the thought of spending potentially £20k to be worse off, doesn't really appeal to me...

They said they would refund £29500 onto my debit card and sent me off to drive 3 hours back home. Nothing more than that.

I received a PDF specification sheet from an Audi dealer today for a car I'm interested in.

It says MILEAGE 27894 and underneath that it says "Recorded mileage cannot be relied upon as the actual mileage run by the vehicle".
Seriously.........

The motor trade has been using that statement for at least 30yrs that I can recall.

Yes, pretty standard disclaimer I’d have said?

I can remember those little white stickers on the speedo on main dealer forecourts that said something about not being able to verify or guarantee the mileage being accurate.

What would you have expected or hoped they would do?

Some effort to retain my custom, an offer to source a replacement vehicle, perhaps cover my expenses as a gesture of goodwill, free service. I choose to buy from a main dealer with the hope that I receive better service than I would expect from Arthur Daley (perhaps I’m showing my age!)

Lexus used approved is a joke. They sell cars with incomplete service histories and dress them up as used approved.

Here's a Lexus used approved RCF...some youtube muppet completely wrapped the 6 layer paint, then unwrapped it. Got a quadbike to push it out of a field with a bale of hay as a cushion, took it to the drag strip etc etc they tried to sell it with an after market exhaust fitted by self muppet. Take their whole operation with a pinch of salt.

Owned by some guy called the Black Panthaa...for sale by Lexus Nottingham for £30k

So why are we all so disappointed that the Rolls Royce here has been clocked?
Surely the statement absolves them of any responsibility.

There's a bit of a non-aligned gap between the steering column and the dashboard in photo 14, from someone who doesn't know this car, does that look right?

Because the “Provenance” certification RR boast about on their website reassures punters who consider spaffing massive amounts of moolah into one of their pre-owned cars that:

Rolls Royce said:
Regardless of age, each Provenance motor car is a masterpiece unto itself, personally selected by the Rolls-Royce team. We demand that our collection be flawless in form and impressive in nature. By upholding a discerning attitude, we ensure that legacies are preserved for generations to come...

Before we award the Provenance title to a certified, pre-owned Rolls-Royce, it must be thoroughly trialed and tested against our legendary standards. Each selected car undergoes a comprehensive, 360 degree inspection and is exhaustively detailed with a written record of its full history before being labelled as certified. As a Provenance owner, you will experience a Rolls-Royce that drives as beautifully as it did the day it was originally released from Goodwood.
