Cheap diesel to buy / run! Which one?? Advice?
Discussion
I'd suggest a small-engine Volvo rather than a 1.9 or 2.0 litre (don't stick on Volvo, I just chose them as they have the image as stolid, slow, safe etc.)
You can just scrape into a 1.6 Litre diesel C30 for £2000. Or an S40 for somewhat less.
My big worry though would be that they are not as reliable as your petrol Clio - DMF, DPF etc. I suspect you might be able to sort the DPF yourself though.

What about moving closer to work, could you look for a student house share?
Nice lateral thinking :-)Insurance requires some odd faffing to get the est deal.
I am 57 with a Fiesta ST - maximum NCD, no accidents or convictions.
Added my girlfriend (on renewal) who is 32, has no NCD (named driver of her mum's 1.2 litre car), has held a licence for 12 years and has no convictions and it was obtainable £20 cheaper... though my previous insurer had it £100 higher. It's a lottery but moneysupemarket.com is your friend.
