Genuine question but what proportion of PH do you think might be capable of such a tinkering?
1-2% or more like 20%?
Just wondering how lame my spannering capability is because "if you can weld" isn't something I come across that often.
I thought maybe like half?!1-2% or more like 20%?

I can't weld for st, but I don't mind pulling subframes and doing bushes etc. And I'm useless as heck!
I am clearly well below par!
In respect of PH, I think time may be more valuable to most people than rolling up the sleeves.

E36 M3 Evo, depending on the mileage you do, this is as much an investment as it is something fun and involving. Of course en E46 is more reliable newer option and you won't feel bad for driving it into the ground. If I had 12k to spend i'd go for the E36 (I am a little biased mind).

Typical PH comment tho, well done for adding value to the topic......

I'd have put the 'pulling subframes / bushes etc' at around the 20% mark and welding in the 10%

For me it's not really about the time it takes - its the fact I can do it, where once I wouldn't have been able. I can't imagine being a proper car enthusiast and not learning how to work on my car and bike. In respect of PH, I think time may be more valuable to most people than rolling up the sleeves.

Yeah that's true. The last time I test drove a car with a salesman next to me was a Civic Type R, and he encouraged me to thrash it everywhere. Otherwise they let me take it out on my own usually.
Agreed, I don't find TT/Golf platform too horrendous to be honest. It's certainly not an 8/10ths and beyond car, but up to that point they're a pretty good steer.

The Golf R seems to get plenty good reports but have never driven one.
Apart from the badge the German cars are ahead when it comes to interiors and paintwork.
Most will prefer the above to having a car that is just better at 8/10th's hence why they sell so well.

You might find it ridiculous, the market doesn't and nor do I. They are fantastic cars, appreciating assets and worthy investment.

The issue is the E36 M3 could be picked up for around the 5-6k mark a few years ago so people remember these prices.Typical PH comment tho, well done for adding value to the topic......
Someone like yourself knows fine that these are going to continue to creep up in value with every passing year.
If someone has the garage space it would be well worth buying one to sit on. Even if you drive it you will no lose your purchase price.
As we all know the E30 M3 is pretty much out of reach now for many so this only adds to the E36 appeal.

Miss my Vi very much..
Great cars, aren't they? Even the tiny fuel tanks and erratic fuel gauges aren't without their charms. :-) 100% the best 4WD cars I've driven.Mine had some money spent on the chassis and was as quick as you'd ever realistically want to travel on the road.

My apologies for the great offense that I have caused, but that price seems utterly bonkers. Typical PH comment tho, well done for adding value to the topic......
It wasnt too long these (e36 m3s) were lemented as the worst incarnation of the M3 and Evos showing less mileage than the linked example would struggle the find a buyer at less than half of the linked example - Remakrable what a couple of years can do for a car's reputation and value.
The previously mentioned R53 MINI GP is a hoot to drive and feels special IME OP. Try and get a run in one before dismissing it straight out

Ah, but that was also back in the days when E30 M3s would have rot lurking underneath them, 964s leaked oil, etc. These are all investment-grade machines now and so longer behave as such It wasnt too long these (e36 m3s) were lemented as the worst incarnation of the M3 and Evos showing less mileage than the linked example would struggle the find a buyer at less than half of the linked example - Remakrable what a couple of years can do for a car's reputation and value.

335i?
I always always loved the TTS - hankered after for one over 10 years - went for a test drive and just felt so boring even though it was quick. Test drove a 335i and seemed so much nicer.

Surely you must have established that when you test drove the TTS, but you bought it anyway?
It is only when you are pushing a car you get to feel the real issues when it comes to the TTS or any car for that matter. You can't do this on a test drive especially now the salesman prefers to sit alongside.
The TTS is not a bad car at all. It is just when you have owned more focused cars in the past it shows up the TTS weaknesses.
