Thanks for that I will show them the CL they do look nice. On the older CLK is there many issues to worry about, what about parts and serving? Also the same with the newer E350.
The CLK doesn't have any major issues but on the older cars check for rust because of their age.

If they can live with a saloon then the E500 is a great pick.

I love a big citroen but ownership of a series one cx, an Xm estate, two by estates and a gsa taught me that mechanical innovation is a wonderful thing but it is always better to build a car out of more substantial materials than liquorice, string and wet cardboard; the fragility of the aforementioned French beauties leading ne to believe that must be what they were collectively assembled out of. When I hear the words Citroën, oleopneumatic and suspension mentioned together I get an uncontrollable tic that hangs around for a few hours. When I hear the word lexus, I feel like I have just sunk into a relaxing bath with a chilled glass of wine because of my experience with a single LS400. Lord forgive me, I have learnt from my mistakes!!

That’s good to know. I will remember to ask about rust. Are parts for them quite reasonable? I just don’t want to recommend one and they become a money pit. That E500 looks great also.

I would imagine them to be quite expensive to maintain. Plus they are quite rare.

Parts are very sensible but at the moment there aren't many petrol ones worth a look at the moment, there is this 55 AMG:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384190009717?hash=item5...

Reakistacally it's at least 1k over the top & also it's not a facelift model as advertised.

If it has to be a coupe then this E500 is a more sensible buy:

I can vouch for the E500. I had the earlier one previously (the 211) and now have a 212 like that one. They are very quiet and smooth when you want to waft. The Airmatic suspension can be left in Comfort mode or switched to Sport which tightens things up.

It's a more mainstream car than an S Class and there's less chance of serious bills. Although the rear air springs seem to spring a leak at around 10 years old. I just had mine done at 11 years/74k miles. Other than that it's run like clockwork in the four years I've had it.

Thanks for that, it does sound excellent, it’s one I will recommend. Is there any known issues with the Airmatic suspension? Have you had any issues with either models in your ownership?

The previous one was a 2005 which I ran from 2010/95k miles to 2017/145k. I stuck a new Airmatic pump on at about 125k miles. £400-ish. The only other non service items were a crank pulley (which was going a bit wobbly) and a boot lock.

I bought the 2010 one in 2017 on 54k miles - it's now on 74k. I have to have one of the seat cooler fans replaced early doors and have just done the rear suspension (£250 a side + fitting).

Other than that, just normal servicing.

As I mentioned previously, on the 212's the rear ones often seem to fail around the 10 year mark. Think of them as a service item.

They used to be expensive but GSF do them for £300 ea, AutoDoc £250.

Excellent shortlist says the totally biased bloke.

Point of information; the E Class coupe is actually based on a C Class floor plan. CL on an S Class.

So they're actually looking at C/E/S in terms of tech & complecity.

The other relevant car could be the CLS which is based on the E Class. Low-roofed 4 seater version.

I may show them the CLS too. I think they’ve made a good choice with Mercedes.

If I didn't need the space of the E Class estate, I'd be very tempted by a CLS or a E Class Coupe. Mainly because I've had 2 x C's and 2 x E's and are familiar with them.

It's a stretched & widened C Class chassis, they are a bigger car.

Out of the two the CL500 is the pick.

They’ve expressed some interest in this:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202103250...

Are there any major areas to check, also would anyone be able to help with a list of questions to ask the dealer. Specifics about the car etc.

I don't know much about them, sorry. There a few current and previous owners on mbclub.co.uk.

If you post it there, someone will respond.

Make sure everything works & then check it again go through the suspension settings & make sure it works fluidly.

The engine is pretty much bulletproof but check to make sure the gearbox fluid & filter have been changed as per schedule (every 40k) & then make sure there are receipts to match the stamps..
