I’d absolutely love an Audi R8 V8. It looks like, and would therefore feel like, a supercar to me.

Low, wide, stunning to look at and noisy!

A similar aged 911 Turbo might be faster and more capable, and I’d take one any day too, but it doesn’t have supercar looks IMO.

R8...more the V10 though to back up the supercar appearance perhaps?

This thread reminds me of the old Top Gear episode 10k bargain Italian supercars! Can't believe that was 18 years ago and as I recall things didn't work out well for any of them.

Whether or not the R8 is really a proper supercar, I'd say it has things sewn up on the cheapest front. They seem to start at 30k and some of those pretty tidy. I'd have one if I was confident that I could afford to run it.

How about a Noble, is that a super car?

Of the more exotic stuff, a Ferrari 360 looks to be a bit cheaper than the cheapest Gallardo. Then for not too much more you can get a 'cheap' Mclaren.

Best watch that TG episode before committing to a cheap super car though.

I was browsing the lower end of the R8 market a few months back - it seemed like an awful lot of them had been wrapped. I guess they may still be good cars, but it put me off.

I think the same rule of thumb that works with sports cars also works - if you can't make an argument that the entry level model is a supercar, none of them are.

Depends on the club entry requirements. For a few of the genuine ‘supercar only’ type clubs, I reckon the cheapest seat is either the cheapest Ferrari you can get your hands on, a McLaren 540C (seen changing hands on collecting cars for around £70-80k) or a 918 Cayman GT4 for something more modern.

Usually, the likes of V8 R8’s, i8, Nissan GTR’s etc are excluded from the entry requirements list. As too are the likes of older Aston Martin’s, whereas normally Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini are ‘all models welcome’.

This is one of the more prominent clubs’ qualifying cars list https://supercar-driver.com/qualifying-car-list/
But is an Ariel Atom or Nomad a supercar? I'd not have said so. That makes their list not "supercars" more "the types of owners we'd like in our club".

It’s clearer with the brands than the cars, I reckon. I’m sure I’ll end up forgetting one, but IMHO we have…

Established super car brands: Ferrari and Lamborghini.
New super car brand: McLaren.

Then you have the hypercar brands: Bugatti, Koenigsegg and Pagani.

Then you have the brands who sometimes release a super car: Porsche, Lexus, Ford, (arguably) Audi.

That was my first thought. Headed off to see how much a Maserati Merak was. €28,000 for one on car and classic.

The correct answer is: Noble M12

Looks like a supercar? Check
Goes like a supercar? Check

Would an Aston Martin Vantage not count as a supercar then?

I don't think it should. Lovely cars but I don't think they tick many of the supercar boxes

I was going to mock its Mondeo tail lights but remembered the Zonda has the heather controls from a Rover 25.

Which reminds me of the anecdote about Aston Martin under Ford ownership, none of the owners cared when the DB7 had Ford switchgear as they hadn't driven a Mondeo, but when Aston upgraded to Volvo parts they all spotted it as their wives/au pairs/etc had Volvos.

I agree. I don’t think any 911 (baring GT1) is a supercar.

This conversation has been had many times in these hallowed forums, and there's never a conclusion. OP, there are plenty of suggestions for nice cars in this thread. Pick one and get the thread locked hehe

100k plus list price, very special car that I'm still sure would "do" most modern cars. It is funny looking back at old car adverts, how cheap cars used to be, only 15 years ago. Sometimes opinions change. They are holding good value. 997 turbo s would be sweet spot, looks epic.

Audi R8 looks good, ticks load of boxes but sitting in them is uncomfortable, which probably makes it a supercar, the Turbo is a 365 supercar.

EVO which is respected on here, calls it a supercar.

I owned a 911 (996) turbo for 5 of 6 years and did 40k in it. I've owned a few supercars.

The 911 turbo is fast. It may also cost a few quid but at no point in 40k miles did it ever feel like a supercar. In fact, other than it's speed mine barely even felt like a sports car.

Clearly it's subjective. I've never been quite sure whether R8s are but I'm genuinely surprised anybody thinks a 911 is

Doug Demuro and Evo is good enough for me.

I'm biased as since seeing a 964 Turbo they have always been a supercar no matter what the latest trend is.

It's comfortably in every day sport car category. Loads of them around, my zone 3 London street has 3 on them (non-turbos - which is just faster 911s)
