Awful perhaps, but more interesting than ANOTHER BMW or Mercedes...?

Bit of an unusual one here... I don't think we've had one on here before. It's more of a Sport-Lecht than a Sonder so bit of a stretch to call it a barge, but like the SL it's neither sporty nor leicht.

I'll graciously stand aside and let someone else take a punt on this. Pretty sure you'll never see another one when out in it.

V8 - check
Performance hugely out of line with the size of engine - check
Suitable marque for a barge - check
Designed to waft - check

Doug DeMuro did a video on it a few years ago, if you are thinking "What the hell is that?!"

When (if ever) were Cadillac actually good?

They are seen to be the pinnacle of US luxury vehicle brands, but have they ever been remotely comparable to Royce / Bentley / Maybach or even Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar etc?

Not that I am particularly au fait with the brand, but it seems like everything wearing a caddy badge from the last 40 years has been depressingly st. ugly, cheaply made, plastic filled, utterly dire garbage.

When did it go wrong? The hilariously huge cars from the 60s do look cool, were they as well made as a contemporary Mercedes for example?

The story behind the Allante is interesting, these cars were shipped back and forth from the US to Italy during production. It's actually not that bad a car, fairly compact, decent looking in the right colours. I like them.

I quite like the Bluebird.

Happy Friday

Reserve already met at £23,250. 8 hours to go.

Late forties, early fifties. In the thirties they were really something, especially the V16.

Eldorado Brougham of 53/57 was hand built and sold at a loss, comparable to an R type Continental.

Having driven one, no. Theyre just crap cars.

A 124, or E34 525i or E32 735i for the same cash.....

Also the midgate pickup truck (badged Escalade IIRC) was a really interesting and useful truck, although it was based on a GM/Chevy truck with added bling a la Mini Vs Riley Elf and Woleseley Hornet.

The Escalades and EXTs seem pretty sought after from my casual browsing of BaT and such.

I bet even then they were half the price, if that, of a contemporary big Benz, probably with considerably more power, far more toys, seats that weren't like a park bench, and less maintenance intensive. Who wanted it to last all that long anyway, cars were improving so rapidly anyone with any money wanted to change fast and enjoy the benefits, they weren't grubbing around in abject poverty like most of Europe.

I've never been particularly impressed by the "we can make a good car if you pay us 4x what an average car costs and it'll last well as long as you spend that over and over and over again in repairs and rebuilds" proposition that Mercedes-Benz offers though.

Talking of Caddys, a hard haggle above thread max, 300+ bhp and less than 40k miles.

That must have looked like Buck Rogers had come to visit in his spaceship in 1978. Looking at a list of other cars launched that same year really puts into perspective how incredible the 928 was, comfortably 10-15 years ahead of it's time.

I posted that Caddy last summer when it didn't sell at 5750, or 4750 by the time it had dropped to still unrealistic money, the ad being from last Aug suggests bumping the price back up (to cover whatever an mot cost maybe?) still isn't working.
£5,500
AT Price Tracker
Advertised 07/08/2023
Change -£250 (-4%)
01/03/2024 £5,500
06/02/2024 £4,000
15/11/2023 £5,000
10/08/2023 £5,750

All that blurb, with this bit toward the end:
'... apart from a current issue with the ignition key module making it a non-starter at the moment...',
It's actually been for sale since at least the beginning of 2022 as I saw it back then. I think it's an awesome car but with it being front wheel drive and left hand drive it just has all the wrong wheels in the wrong places. For £1500 it would be a laugh but too steep as it is.

Going to cost a bit with the tax and the fuel. Pretty good for a left-field suggestion. Better than a Nissan Bluebird.

Quite like it. A lot better looking than the previous generation.

If it won't start then it does not matter how many wheels it has, nor where they are.
