Immobiliser problems are going to be a nightmare on a square wheeler like that, outside of the US of A. My guess is the immobiliser ECU has lost it's handshake with the engine management ECU.

It could well be an easy fix at a US GM dealer, but tricky here. If it was just an ignition module that would be easy enough to get online, ship and plug & play, so why hasn't it?

I posted that Caddy last summer when it didn't sell at 5750, or 4750 by the time it had dropped to still unrealistic money, the ad being from last Aug suggests bumping the price back up (to cover whatever an mot cost maybe?) still isn't working.
£5,500
AT Price Tracker
Advertised 07/08/2023
Change -£250 (-4%)
01/03/2024 £5,500
06/02/2024 £4,000
15/11/2023 £5,000
10/08/2023 £5,750

All that blurb, with this bit toward the end:
'... apart from a current issue with the ignition key module making it a non-starter at the moment...',
It's actually been for sale since at least the beginning of 2022 as I saw it back then. I think it's an awesome car but with it being front wheel drive and left hand drive it just has all the wrong wheels in the wrong places. For £1500 it would be a laugh but too steep as it is.
If it won't start then it does not matter how many wheels it has, nor where they are.
I don't remember it being a non-runner the first time I saw it advertised. That must be a new feature.

That must have looked like Buck Rogers had come to visit in his spaceship in 1978. Looking at a list of other cars launched that same year really puts into perspective how incredible the 928 was, comfortably 10-15 years ahead of it's time.
In the same auction, lot 205 is a Volvo 960 estate, P reg so 1996, with a quoted 611,000 miles in the text.
If I knew how to extract the photos from the ACA website I would post them here.

yeah, must be a recent thing as the old pictures which are from previous ads show RPM on the very cool dials.

Here's the (non-)money shot!

Volvos are well-known for their longevity but this six-cylinder 2922cc 960 estate example has achieved over 600,000 miles (although its odometer shows 183,208 miles, but the speedometer has been changed). The actual mileage is stated as 611,233 miles. The car was registered in October 1996 and has an MoT through to March 2025. Two registered keepers overall are recorded by the V5C. The car is reported by the vendor as running very well with no issues at all, having been stored in a garage but regularly turned over since July 2022. In February 2021, it received a complete respray. It is also fitted with Pirelli tyres. Paperwork with the Volvo includes the V5C, current MoT certificate and details of the speedo change. There's also photos of the 2021 respray, owner's handbook, various MoT certificates and a large stack of invoices back to 2009.

Would you expect a car that age to have had the weather seals replaced?

I've only done a small number of restos but the thing they've all needed is new seals to keep weather out of something. When it's something fixed like a lamp cluster then it's not the end of the world if you can't find a new gasket because you can make one from closed cell adhesive foam. But doors and windows on cars like this are too new to use off the roll profiles.

Anyway, not much of a problem if it lives indoors and only ventures out in the sunshine, but that feels a waste of a proper Volvo.

Have you driven one? Smoother than 99% of modern stuff and just as capable... still cannot get over how light and smooth the controls were on mine, you'd swear it was from 2016, not 1986. Mine also was laid up for 13 years, fired up like it had just been running, never put a foot wrong since, now done 30k since then!

Yep, my grandfather used to have one. Each to their own, but not sure how it's as capable as 99% of other cars, certainly not in terms of interior/cabin noise, performance, braking or handling. I also think it just looks like a lump of car.

Still, boring if we liked the same stuff smile

The story behind the Allante is interesting, these cars were shipped back and forth from the US to Italy during production. It's actually not that bad a car, fairly compact, decent looking in the right colours. I like them.
Nice looking, but the Northstar engine was quite a problematic one.

It would be a laugh for £15. I doubt anyone would pay more for it. The SL is just in another league imho.

Maybe, but it won't keep breaking down and emptying your wallet each time. Classic motoring for the impecunious.

Our family also had one in the early 1990's. I was very impresed at that age it had electric windows, central locking and sliding sun roof. The german made would have none of this most often.

Linked from this ad. Who on earth will want to pay £2000 for a 35y/o Volvo 340 with a crusty bonnet?

I remember that the 2.9 was problematic in them with the block. Was the speedo replaced with the engine? Just wondering.

By any objective measure, they were really good cars in their day. Better equipped and more reliable than the opposition as a rule, and excellent value for money. Sure, they're no classic charmer today for most of us, but they were undeniably a decent form of transport then and they make a nice usable classic now.
