My brother just traded his Civic 1.8 for an Accord. Nothing went wrong with his but he found with urban driving if you want some performance the engine does have to be driven properly and it was obviously thirstier than the 2.2 diesel which is in the Accord he bought. He'll enjoy the low down torque which is more suited for his commute but I don't think he'll enjoy the DPF bill that will inevitably come along lol
And the clutch bill. The 2.2 Cdi is (or at least they were) notorious for clutch failure.
The 1.8 is a fine engine in terms of reliability. However, I expected it to have at least some performance in line with the earlier NA type R engines. It doesn't, and it's not that economical.
I don't think you'll go wrong with a Focus if you just want another box to drive around in. We had a mk3 as a pool car at work that got treated like the town slapper and it just ran and ran without complaint. It was also really nice to drive... well judged suspension and really good direct steering. I much preferred it to the 1 series that replaced it. It was a hateful thing.

1.8 Civic returns me 45mpg mixed, goes pretty well in gear. Certainly not sluggish. Practical seats/boot. Can’t hand a bike rack off the hatch however, but you can fit a couple in the car. Handling benefits greatly from decent front tyres and a geometry check (well duh). Utterly reliable.

45mpg? Motorway all the way? Ours averages 35mpg doing the local school run.Test driver said:
Actually I have a few cars and motorbikes. Golf r32, clk 55 and a fireblade for starters.
Oh well I guess putting down someone who's looking for a daily car is justified then, correct? Because as we all know, unless you drive something that does nothing to the gallon then you're no car enthusiast. johnwilliams77 said:

Nope. Just means you're poor.Test driver said:
Nothing says car enthusiast like mpg.
Oh wait
Oh dear. Well you all heard it here, if you're getting good MPG out of your car, it's time to hand in your car enthusiast points to Test Driver. More like Race Driver, I wish my car got low to mid 20's everywhere I went. Oh wait

The idiots obsessed by mpg should head over to the Martin Lewis money saving expert website or netmums instead imo.

That just makes sound you like a plank.Outside the world of the minted PH director type (I assume you're one of those pulling in 6+ figures) there are those of us who don't get company cars and have to pay for our own fuel (the shame I know!)
I do about 20-25k a year paid for from my own pocket. I'm afraid that mpg does matter to me.
