They aren't reliable in the slightest, and a cheap one can be a world of pain, but how about an RX8? 230bhp and can easily get one for less than £2k.

Why not get an ST170 it's already closer to 200bhp & can be easily tuned to 200+bhp

I was under the impression that nearly none of the ST170's produced the power? I drove a couple over the years and as a Ford fan it pains me to say it, I was massively underwhelmed by the strange gearing and not much power until right at the top of the rev range. I always liked that model as well because even the basic models drove well. Compare it to a Civic Type R and they are a world apart, the Civic is just a better car in every way.

Boxter.

2k to buy, probably more again to maintain but thought I'd throw it in as I couldn't believe I see some on autotrader for under a grand. Mass produced Porsche!
A cracking Shout poverty Pork - but it has to be the S for the fun to begin IMHO

Even the most ropey road worthy ones are nearer £3k?

I'd vote for the Mk1 TT;

I've had mine since last November, there are plenty around for under £2k and they are quick enough for the road imo.

Even the low end models are 200 bhp+ that should be enough to have some fun in surely?

Hey, I'd really recommend the clio 182 sport.

I'm selling mine.
