Sorry forgot to update this post!
Dealership head office came back to me half apologising and offering to "allow" me to keep the deposit contribution and giving me a £50 discount on the first service then £100 on the second one (I'm assuming the second one is a major service?).
They are actually making it sound like they are doing me a favour with this deal but I've told them to stuff it and have logged a complaint with the financial ombudsman with the recommendation that this goes to the FCA.
Will post back once I get a response.

Given that you have bought a car from the dealer and if you kick up a fuss you will likely get less in terms of favourable treatment in the event of faults, warranties, etc?

I did consider that but the principle still remains - why should a dealer get away with their (questionable) actions? It is only a small amount of money in the grand scheme of things but the online form to contact the financial ombudsman really wasn't that difficult so worst case scenario they are not interested in my case and it get's left at that.Given that you have bought a car from the dealer and if you kick up a fuss you will likely get less in terms of favourable treatment in the event of faults, warranties, etc?

Like the OP I did a similar discounted deal as the with VWFS. No issues with them, some people can and want to pay it off for the discount, most don't.
The dealer has broken the rules in this place and been caught out by the OP's vigilance.
Go for it OP. And get make sure you get the free servicing

I'm a bit confused why you wouldn't just leave it at that.Dealership head office came back to me half apologising and offering to "allow" me to keep the deposit contribution and giving me a £50 discount on the first service then £100 on the second one (I'm assuming the second one is a major service?).

You took out the finance knowing you were going to pay it off to take advantage of the incentives, there was a fairly high chance this would situation would happen.
In between then and now there is a lot of coming and going and you have come off better with service discount, they have stopped their pursuit and if you needed to you could probably use that dealer for any work (whether you want to or not!).
Call it a day you're taking the piss irrelevant of what you think the principal may be I'm not sure your right!
The dealership can afford the discount / incentive on the car only when financed because the cost of giving the discount away is effectively hidden / recouped within the finance. I'm not saying the dealer is not innocent but I think you could chase more righteous subjects!

op knew exactly how to play the system at the disadvantage of the dealership.
As I said my dad did the same thing but did the hp over a year or a few months or something so he effectively still saved a few K and the dealer got their incentives etc.
