Not sure if this is just my current experience, or more the attitude of dealers...

We have just adopted a second dog, so my golf gti is no longer suitable. So, onto autotrader, find a few estates that may be suitable, phone up and either get no one answering and it cuts off, or I leave a message and get no follow up!.
Ok, also try email...now very occasionally this has actually got a result, so start a conversation, ask if they will take the Golf in px....yes of course, send us the details....so I do, along with photos.
The response?....nothing, no reply, literally zilch!...try phoning and again, nothing!....why is buying a car so flipping hard!!!!!!

For reference, my px is a fully standard and immaculate 2006 golf gti, looking to put in upto £1000 cash on top for the right car, Wbac value at £4200, Cap guide from £4k to £5k depending on condition.

Anyone else experienced similar problems?

I'd probably forget the part ex option.

Sell the Golf privately or use a car buying service. Then you can shop for your estate with cash.

What kind of things are you looking at?

I can always remember it being hard. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, view it as natural selection in weeding out the rubbish garages

I'm sure most car dealers are a bunch of lazy bds, but to be fair to them, they probably get so many time wasters calling every day that I'm not too surprised lots of them don't bother following up queries.

What are you asking about when you are calling them?

What are you asking about when you are calling them?
If i ever got to speak to anyone, it would be to check the car in question is available, would they take mine in px and to arrange to come and see it, best i get is "let me check about your px" take all the details and then nothing.....

I'd just ask whether the car is in stock and then go and see it if they say yes. Once you're physically there you can argue the toss over your part ex

Yes I’d agree. OP - Just ask about the car you want to buy and the PX can be discussed if you like the car when you’ve seen and driven it

The time I actually spoke to someone was the one and only time that I actually spoke to anyone!...As I said at the outset, actually getting in contact with places seems to be the main issue, as has been mentioned, I think I will use the lack of comms as a good way of whittling out the bad places!

Amazingly, whilst replying on here, a C220 estate popped up on Autotrader, and already had a great chat with the garage about it...there is hope out there after all!

Imagine what it'd be like trying to deal with one of these garages that you can't get hold of if you actually had a problem with the car you bought!

I do agree with some of the other posts that you will probably be better selling your Golf as a separate transaction.

From a dealers point of view you are looking to trade in the Golf and put in around £1000 to trade up, if the Golf isn't something they want to sell themselves then there's nothing in the deal for them, they probably don't see that it's worthwhile doing in the current climate when they may well feel they can sell the same car as a cash or even better, Financed sale and make more from it.

I fully understand that, but is it really that hard for a dealer / trader to actually reply with that, rather than just ignore me??

You'll find that a lot of traders at this end of the market are one man bands or with 1 or 2 employees. They'll be with customers, buying cars, parts, driving, possibly still going to auctions, collecting cars themselves etc. Sure customer care should be tops, but these people are not administrators sending lovely email replies. If you call them and they are busy, x number of people will have called too and they've probably forgotten who is who.

What they want is customers in front of them making a decision.

Which is great, but when most places are now appointment only, you have no choice but to try and phone, or email, or post!...maybe carrier pigeon is the way forward??
