Fuel efficient, cool looking diesel
Discussion
Hi all,
Time has come for me to move out and buy my first house and with that comes downgrading the car to save money on fuel and insurance.
I’m think I want a diesel as I do 50+miles a day (and I like the torque) preferably an estate because they’re cool but I guess I’m open to anything. Must be an auto because traffic is a reoccurring theme in my commute.
My budget is around £5500 and I want something that does 40+ mpg.
Thanks

Not a diesel but a nice turbo engine and should be economical

Automatic will reduce your options in my opinion at your price range

Can you give examples of cars you like as a starting point? I know I'm a bit out of touch but I suspect most of us wouldn't put estate cars and 'cool' in the same sentence so we might need some clues!
Sorry yeah forgot to put that in, big fan of the e91 3 series, also quite like Passat estates. That type of thing. Saab 9-3 is one of the better looking estates to my eyes, tricky to buy with sensible mileage though. The 150 Bhp 1.9 Tid is the one to aim for really.
Passats etc are ok but still very expensive.

9-3 TTid is a better stronger unit than the 1.9 Tid, both cool though but getting a nice one is hard and they seem to rust a lot around subframes ive noticed.
An E91 is a good shout though, not very big though, enjoy driving mine (318d) gets incredible economy if driven sensible, would rate these over the the F31's, just felt better made when I ran side by side.
Insignia Tourer? In the right spec these look rather cool I think too, nice designed cars - and most likely a pretty new plate car too within your budget.
Good luck hunting!

50 miles per day, 250/week plus weekends. That's 12k/ year, although with holiday maybe that takes care of weekends too. .which is well under what most would think sensible to justify a derv. A 5.5k diesel will soon f
k you over with a DPF or EGR issue, and you're talking Euro 5 at best with this budget.
Where I appreciate "torque", I would really look at petrol, yes maybe lower mpg, but cheaper fuel, and less to go wrong.
Astra Elite spec http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2025062839...

320i, not 320d http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2025051222...
Etc.

I find estates pretty cool and often better looking than the corresponding saloon. Two great looking estates I owned are the Alfas 156 and 159. A 159 with the Fiat/GM 1.9 tdi fits the brief but they are pretty rare. Edited by fflump on Tuesday 5th August 14:49

Honestly know nothing about Saabs, are they reliable ? What s it like getting parts for them?
Parts are ok, mechanical parts as they were shared across many GM platforms, I found body panels and light fittings and things unique to the 9-3 a little harder to source when I ran my 9-3 TTid.There are many aftermarket motor factors too (neobrothers) is one that sticks in my mind.
I enjoyed my TTid (its a fiat engine, and used in commercial vans, so yes they are reliable if maintained) Swirl flaps and EGR valve can be problematic, and oil filter is at the back of the engine so is a stupidly messy job to change that! - but, nice meaty feeling engine, but did feel sometimes fragile in other aspects - I do love the way they look though the wagons.

I've just bought a Merc E350 CDI coupe and I'm really enjoying it. My daily commute is circa 70mile round trip and it's perfect. Looks great, to my eyes at least, is quick and economical and a great place to be. Very comfy, quiet and has all the toys you'd need. I paid £4800 for mine with 78k miles and a FMBSH.

They use GM lumps so can be found in Vauxhall/Opel/Holden/Cadillac. Parts, so the Swedish government has a big warehouse in Sweden full of new parts and 3rd party manufacturers still make parts for them, we did have a UK importer in Milton Keynes called Oreo who supplied parts to UK SAAB garages, this has now changed I'm not sure who distributes them now. But there is a number of UK SAAB garages still going, there is 3 localish to me in MK.
You can often find that a part from SAAB will be £££ but the same part from Vauxhall will be ££
