Can anyone help or advise me correctly

Now please do excuse what maybe a premature comment considering i may not be doing this for another 6 months or so but here's the question.
I have for the last few months been considering purchasing a VW golf, but prefrebly one thats maybe a little more special than say a standard petrol golf or a TDI of some varient, now its worth mentioning that i am by no means flush with cash so Golf R's are out of the question but given choice which would you rather go for a Golf Edition 30 or an R32 around the region of 2005- 2008 price ranges, the reason i say these particular models is that for anyone more in the know than me, is the Edition 30 whilst maybe not as quick etc as the R32 is it a more "special" version of the car than say an R32 which i'm not sure how many they made of each.
I've always had this itch to own something that little bit more special, something to keep, I am open to so many other suggestions btw, any help/advice would be much appreciated :-)

Not all r32 cost so much to tax, anyhow I think the Ed30 will retain value on the basis VW fans value the limited edition cars. Aside from the fruity exhaust note, the R32 was overshadowed for performance and dynamically the second the R was released.
Many will advocate that the AWD of the R32 and R make them more "special", however from a driving perspective, the FWD GTi models are more attractive in my option. The AWD experience of these VAG products doesn't make them a Mitsubishi Evo hooligan toy afterall.
The "edition" GTis will always be the most sought after, and the most "special" to those in the know.
Comes down to your preferences mainly ....... do you want a car that others think is "special". do you want the best driver's Golf for the money. are you interested in retaining value. do you want a blunt, heavy, thirsty, tax burden "boot", rather than an engaging and agile "trainer"
ED30 is easier and cheaper to tune. 300bhp + is easy to achieve whereas getting the same from an R32 will cost a lot of £'s. Pre March 2006, the tax on an R32 will be £315. After, will be over £500 a year.
Best to try both before you make your mind up. I have a modified Pirelli (so last of the ED30 with a different trim and wheels basically). Over 300bhp and drives, handles and stops really well.

If you've decided on a golf, then I'd definitely go for an Edition 30 over the R32. As others have said, they are more tunable if you wish to go down that route, and probably a little more nimble.
We had an Ed30 a few years back, and it was fantastic. It did everything well, a really complete package. In the 4 years we owned it (bought 2nd hand, 2 years old), absolutely nothing went wrong, nothing about the car annoyed us, no niggles, just utterly reliable and no nonsense.

Thanks everyone for the advice it seems the Edition 30 is the way to go then?
As for the reason for wanting one it comes down more to the fact that i have always in the past wanted something say with some sort of a heritage or more sought after than say the "standard" car and maybe even something of a project if say i had to buy a cheaper car that meant it needed light work on it to get to a good condition.
I am glad people have said the Edition 30 actually as that's the way i was leaning towards before people answered, but felt others may know that bit more to justify one over the other.

But my missus is not one for special editions, and I'd be the one cherishing it whereas she will park it as close as possible to the supermarket doors, not leave massive gaps to the next car to avoid stonechips etc etc.

Here's the thing & this is just my opinion, I'd actually go for the R32 if you want a special feeling Golf they're hard to beat up until recently my Gran had an MK5 R32 with an K&N Replacement filter & Supersprint Exhaust. The Edition 30 for me isn't special enough, everyone knows if you want the best drivers hot hatch the RS250 Megane rules let alone once you get a Cup Chassis'd model & this is where the ED30 falls down for me because if I wanted a special 4 pot hot hatch then I would be buying the RS250.
At which point if I'm not getting the best drivers hatch or the car that comes second that (5 pot Focus ST) has an engine that adds a bit of character, at that point if I'm going for the Golf it has to be the one with the V6.
It doesn't even come second as the 5 Pot ST Focus just edges it, depending on your budget there's also the earlier Golf R:

It's true though, I'm a huge fan of the VWs but for an ultimate FWD car with equally good residuals a Renault Sport trumps a Mk5 GTI with a tad more power & tartan.
