Commuter car 800mile round trip
Discussion
The pre covid transport links haven't recovered meaning the usual flying commuter route from Glasgow to London isn't as readily available as it was.
I recently sold up on my X5M due to it being an ornament although I did for a short spell do the 800mile round trip in it over a few weeks last year, which was between 5 1/2 to 6 hours door to door, easily doable on a bi weekly basis.
I've therefore been trawling the ads to consider what is out there as a car which will eat this journey in reasonable comfort but not breaking the bank. It would be a short term fix (6months approx) until a bit of normality returns.
no older than 2015, preferably under 60k miles, open to bodystyle, bit of comfort.
2015 730d m sports with circa 50-60k miles seem to fit the budget, anything else ?

When I was looking at a very similar question, Exeter to Aberdeen actually, the crossover between comfort and economy was a BMW 520d Efficient Dynamics, with a manual gearbox. Volvo options were a close second, an S60 specifically.
If you care about economy, search Autotrader using £20 and £30 road tax, for instance.

I used to do a similar journey in facelifted A5 Sportback SE Technik, 2.0TDi with the smallest wheels they would sell me! (17" iirc)
You can get there and back on a tank of fuel, and it's quite a nice place to sit assuming you get one with the tech pack and top end stereo.
Something like this, but with the 6 speed manual:

Other than being a 2014 car (though only 31k miles to compensate), this....I recently sold up on my X5M due to it being an ornament although I did for a short spell do the 800mile round trip in it over a few weeks last year, which was between 5 1/2 to 6 hours door to door, easily doable on a bi weekly basis.

Don't fancy 5 hours on the train wearing a mask? No me neither.
I regularly do 200+ miles trips ( Mondays and Fridays fortunately, not every day)
The most comfortable car I've had was a Passat, followed by a Volvo S90.
Get in, sit down set off and then you're there, no need to stretch legs at the end of a journey in either of these.

I would be looking at an E Class for that kind of journey... My old passat was comfy for long runs, the C Class is much comfier than it and our E Class is even nicer for long drives...
