Hey guys

First this forum is a brilliant resource, I asked 3 years ago a similar question but with a view to only keeping that car for a year and with a lot of very helpful and much appreciated replies settled on a Saab 9-3 Aero, well that car cost me just over 1 bag and lasted me 3 years with little to no trouble whatsoever (everything worked), its now developing electrical faults (eek), a knackered stereo (wow - but the engine is still great) with 120k on the clock and I want to swap it out for something else.

I have a budget of about 4,500 max and want it to last me a couple of years, was hoping for:

1. 2005 - 2007 range?? maybe I'm being a bit ambitious here
2. Super cruiser, similar thrones to the Saab (great seats, you guys were right about that!)
3. Lots of electrics to go wrong (electric seats, heated seats, cooled seats, parking sensors, all the awesome crap that can break later and not get fixed but good when it worked and doesn't stop the car driving or being illegal when it does break)
4. Child friendly, i.e. big cruiser, luxury (I'm getting old)
5. a bit of umph
6. Diesel with enough smoke trails to hide a small island from view
7. a boot big enough to store a small shed in (bike)
8. The important stuff, i.e. the engine, clutch etc built like something out of the Panzer division.

The other option is to personal lease, but I've never done this before - mileage per year is probably about 10,000 not much really.

I was looking at the BMW 5 series MSport diesel but the mileage on those things at my budget is 115k+, whats your take on that kind of mileage?

Would really appreciate any replies and also thoughts on lease.

Thanks all and again cheers for such a great recommendation on the Saab, solid car for the money, bargain really.

Thanks chap - the Volvo's do look like they would fit my requirements but I was holding out to see if I could bag a Merc or a BM, or something else? its on the list! if I have to sacrifice anything I'd sacrifice boot space.

Any more recommendations? also what kind of mileage buying range is ok for these cars? considering I'd probably keep it a couple of years.

Cheers

The battleship is about the best on offer at the minute :-D, I loved the Saab it was / is a luxury missile but fancy something different, the 9-5 does look good but again something new, what do you think?

Also open to personal hire / lease but could probably only stretch to about 200 a month max and would also need 10k miles p/a.

PS Had 2 x Subaru's already so they are done to death, great cars though.

Cheers fellas!

Thank you very much guys for all these great replies, the Mercs are looking good (and I thought the black mondoe was also not a bad deal) and not too bad on cost / mileage so I'd say they are now top of my list - particularly the E320 Cdi (thanks for the tip), otherwise that 7 series was a beast!

On another note I'm also checking out personal contract hire as well, mainly the Skoda Yeti 1.2 DSG, any of you had one of these? not exactly a cruiser but its new .... EDIT actually just had a good look at one, hmm, doesn't quite fit anywhere near my requirements (not sure why I contemplated it in the first place, dazzled by "new car")! i'll stick to the Mercs, just got find a good one now.
