Hi all

Looking to buy the Audi A6 Avant 2.5, pref diesel. Probs looking at an older model so 2003-2005.

My question is, most of them I'm looking at are Auto. Is the 2.5 Diesel thirsty on Auto ?

I ask as I've never owned a Diesel Auto. I know Petrol can be thirsty on an Auto but is it the same for a Diesel ?

Thanks in advance

Kind Regards

I'm not necessarily looking for an Auto, I have an Auto petrol at the moment (Vectra) but looking at getting an allroad or the standard A6 avant.

How is the 2.5 a dog ? is the 1.9 any better ?

The Audi 2.5 TDI is a dog, + avoid multitronic. For diesel autos I'd look @ MB.
MB ?

Ive seen a few Mercs about im looking at a 1500 budget. Seen a few A6 avants I like the look of, right interior etc but they are Auto. Ive seen 2.5 and 1.9. I fancy getting diesel so it will cover the miles.

Yes, I'd go for the standard A6 or the Allroad which ever comes first in my budget. Budget will grow whilst im waiting for the right one to crop up. The allroad diesel is only the 2.5. So is that still a dog with a better Auto box ?

I'd rather have the manual version.

Yeah I've heard thy are expensive to run with the Suspension pumps failing etc, I'll see if I can find an A6 Avant in a 1.9.... and manual.

What makes the 2.5 A dog ?

I'll see whats about although I dont think the 1.9 is out of reach. Like I say it's 1500 at the moment but that'll grow for a few months yet whilst im waiting for the right one.

Thanks for the advice

Im after diesel for the simple fact is I want it to cover the miles.

Every weekend I do a 120 (each way) mile trip. Usually Motorway but can take the back roads too. 6 miles trip to and from work.

At the moment I have a Vectra B 1.8 Petrol Auto and its thirsty as F**k

I do like the idea of the 130 1.9 Diesel and in Manual would be ideal.

Right ok, anyone owned the manual versions ? Are they any better ?

Thanks for the advice, I like the suggestions. What about something in the BMW range ? 318 Tourer in a manual ?

This is along the lines that I was looking at.

Its got the right steering wheel and the right trim, and the right engine.

Would like one with a few less miles, though this engine would probs last way beyond what its already done looked after.

I have owned both, the 2.5tdi Quattro was very thirsty, often sitting at around 22mpg for the whole tank, on a run it would nudge over 30mpg.

The 1.9tdi has the horrid multitronic gearbox and averaged 33mpg over the year and 30k miles I had it.

V7 D5 Auto will see around 35mpg in comparison.

Merc E320cdi will see around 35mpg in comparison.

Also the A6 of that era was well behind the Volvo, Merc and BMW in terms of quality, ride and overall feel. But did look nice.
Always liked that style of Merc but maybe the 3.2 would be too big.

I'm presuming the Audi A4 wouldn't be a better choice ? again with the 1.9 manual ?

I think the Merc would be too costly to insure with it being a 3.2 anyway

I did have a Galaxy with the 1.9 PD engine and it pulled like a train it was a good engine, which is why I like the idea of the A6 in a 1.9.

E46 Touring ? What are they like to live with.?

I was thinking diesel would be better as I do a lot of stop/start in town traffic on the commute to work every day so I thought diesel would be a better choice over petrol.

The Vectra I have is a bit long in the tooth now and starting to go wrong and no point putting money into it. Someone has offered me £35 for it which I think is reasonable LOL.

Is the A6 1.9 a PD engine ?

Then you don't need a diesel.
The commute to work is a lot of stop start traffic ? make a difference ?

Thanks for the advice.. I prefer the simplicity of Petrol.

This. Wouldn't touch a diesel in the OP's budget for this kind of requirement. I'm assuming petrol models will be cheaper to buy (comparible spec, year, mileage), not much different on MPG and certainly cheaper to maintain.
Thanks Much Appreciated. I guess, I was wary of petrol due to my current car being very thirsty. But it is ancient and its Auto.

What year?

As mentioned above, I don't think you need a diesel for your mileage and journey types. However, it's up to you what you go for.

Edited to add - noticed the budget now. Guess it will be an E46 then?
The one I found on ebay is 2004, Although. I going to look again later and see if I can find a Petrol version.

I'm currently hunting for a sub £1k car. Mine will be petrol though. I'll let you know if I find anything good.
Please do, be interesting to see your findings. I think the E46 has swayed me though. Well done that man for the suggestion.

This is the problem, Can spot a munter a mile off one BM I just saw - Full MOT nothing wrong with it listed in the description but the MOT history seemed to be a bit shady with a constant oil leak. Stay away from that one.
