After 2 years of countless smiles from my Clio 182 FF - it's time for a change.

With around 8K to spend, a Clio 200 CUP seems like a logical choice but what else should I try?

It's only driven 6 months of the year with the other 6 spent in London so practicality is not top of the list. However it must be raw, involving and make me smile!

What would you buy?

Thanks for the suggestions. Some great ones!

I think for me turbocharging the Clio would ruin it's spirit for me. I don't really have the time to organise the work either at the moment - heard they are great fun though.

S2000/VXR220's sound like great possibilities - something I haven't considered! Can't say a 944 floats my boat really - a little too much of a classic for what will be a daily.

Anymore suggestions?

Hmm, I've heard fiestas are superb so would be keen to give one a go - but they are almost as common as Golf R's and if possible I've always enjoyed the satisfaction of owning something a little different! Great suggestion though!

Yes you're right, something different would help reduce comparison - the S2000 looks very tempting in this respect! In regards to the MX-5, having driven one I was neither overjoyed nor disappointed - I thought it was a great car but never really got my pulse racing.

The Clio 200 cup with likely feel less 'raw' than the 182, bit heavier, much more stable/grippy. Would say a mk3 Megane would be the obvious next step but the budget only really covers a mk2.
Yes, I have heard this! Most I have spoken to say they are a better drive for it but the loss of 'rawness' is a worry. I'll have to drive one to see for myself.

I would very much like a Mk3 Megane CUP but they are, as you say, currently a little too much - even if I could afford one i'd then be in M3 territory and that could potentially start a whole new ball game! wink

I went from a Clio 172 to a 2016 VW Polo Gti and don't regret it one bit.

I would say if you are going to move away from the Clio then maybe like me get something that addresses the Clio's shortcomings.

I'm not sure a Clio 200 is going to be that much of a difference. Yes it's bigger and more practical, nicer inside etc but it's basically the same torqueless gutless engine and it gets really bad mpg in comparison to the lighter 172/182.

It all depends on your budget. Maybe something rwd or maybe something turbocharged would be the way forward?

Driving my current GTI is a pleasure compared to the 172. Driving position isn't all awkward and impossible to H&T in and it's also got bags of low down turbocharged torque which feels great compared to the bloody 172 that wanted thrashing absolutely everywhere to get a shift on.

R26 Megane?
Your new GTI sounds lovely! Although I think we have different views on this one, I think the reason I enjoy the 182 so much is the fact you have to really drive it to get the best out of it! For me it's quirks are what makes it special for me - I would like to try something turbocharged but I think for me the the race to the redline always bests low down torque! A Megane Mk3 sounds like the best option I just need to rob a bank first! lol

Enjoy the new motor!
