Hi all, new member here...go easy

I'm moving on from my trusty, yet underpowered 75bhp VW Polo 1.4 TDI 2003 and thinking of getting something a bit bigger, faster and better looking.

Seems like the 1.4 tsi golf is the perfect fit...it's in my budget.

Why?

It's bigger and more roomy than than the Polo. It's newer, so you have more of the new technology/features within the car. It is faster. It looks better and i'm hoping it's more fun to drive.

Only questions I have are:
How is it in terms of fuel? My VW Polo is pretty damn great as it's a diesel.
How reliable is it? My Polo is damn good but showing it's age right now.
Are there any common problems?
ALSO, is the DSG worth it or is it problematic?

I'm thinking of getting the Match Edition too.

I have the 122 1.4 7spd Mk7 Match, 2014.

Town economy is often low 30s in rush hour.
6 Miles across town in light traffic will see 40mpg.
60-65mph run high 50s and 70-75 high 40s.
It has enough go for all but quick overtakes on single carriageways. I miss my 540i on those!!

The DSG box is okay but has just had a software update. Needed it because it was thumping through the gears and very much all or leave you stranded part way out at junctions. It’s done 9700 miles in 3 years.

Stop/start doesn’t function most of the time due to short journeys and lack of battery power.

It does run and cruise quietly and has been an easy car to get along with. It handles well enough too.

Auto parking brake is great, ACC takes a bit of getting used to and the infotainment menus offer a good variety of things to tweak.

Plenty of storage and the dual height boot floor is useful.

Oh, that's better MPG than I thought. My distance to work is usually in light traffic, I get about mid 30's/40. Can you do a software update on the mk6? I haven't got a clue.

Is it loud on a cold start? One thing I hate about diesels is how loud they are. Mine sounds like a tractor.

I had that motor in my Scirocco. For what it was, it was actually a sweet little engine. It never felt laggy and i reckon it was quicker than the figures suggested. Although, that's usually the case with many of VW's engines.

I think that it'd suit the Golf perfectly. Much more enjoyable than a diesel and can be remapped for a bit more oomph if required. It wasn't as good on fuel as i'd hoped, i'll be honest, but my commute is alot of stop/start tbf.

Given the option. i would probably go for the DSG, even if i didn't do alot of town driving. That's just personal preference though. Just make sure that it's had it's oil and filter service every 40k miles and it should be fine.

Great to hear. If you were to buy a used one, what's the most mileage you would be willing to buy one for? I was thinkng of nothing above 90k personally.

Service intervals on mine are 2 years or 20k - it’s a Motability car.

Noise on cold start? As quiet as a mouse. It was taken for MoT last week and I didn’t hear it go or come back.

VW will be able to tell you about software changes. Mine was listed as a recall.
