My girlfriend is currently looking to upgrade her faithful Citroen C1 to something a bit nicer, and has decided on an A3 / 1 series. She has seen an approved used 2014 BMW 116d for £10k with 34k miles on it, and it seems to fit the bill well. Is there anything in particular to be on the look out on these?

As it happens my mother has a 118i which is a fantastic little car, all it has needed in 5 years and 60k is a water pump which was covered by the warranty. They seem well equipped as standard so no worries there, and the car itself is a lovely thing so we are happy with the 1 series in general.

It is the older N47 version she is looking at, I am aware the early versions of this had timing chain issues but seem to remember this was resolved with the later models, is this correct? And if so, which year did this come into effect?

Appreciate any help smile

I know these aren't the most exciting of cars... I assume they will probably be fine? smile

Thanks for the input chaps.

Good to hear there are no major issues, sounds like it could be a winner. It will be used for a decent commute (20 miles each way on NSL A roads) and occasional 100 mile trips, I would imagine a DPF would be ok with that?

Interestingly the equivalent A3 seems to be quite a bit dearer, but a Golf might be worth investigating. Space wise I think it will be ok, especially coming from a C1, but I will mention it again as its a good point.
