We've got the chance of a wee cottage on the isle of Skye for silly cheap money BUT the 2 mile access road has rocks and stones 1 inch to 2 feet across and 1 in 2.5 gradients. Land Rover short wheelbase seems the logical choice maybe about 10 years old but can anyone suggest anything else which may be ok? It's narrow too.
Thanks.

One of the reasons it's cheap. But 40 grand for a detached 3 bedroom cottage and half an acre of land sounds good to me. No mains electric or gas. Brilliant location for walking and fishing and relaxing. Stunning scenery too.
Not sure a Fiat Panda's tyres would cope or if the engine would tackle 40 % inclines?

Jimny engine too weak I'd say.
I'm thinking Defender 90 2.2 turbo diesel with a quality remap. Jeep Wrangler 4.0 straight 6 petrol with stock engine.
I think the right tyres will be crucial. 80 series at a guess.

Half an hour would be right. It's dreadful all the way almost.

May I suggest that you do what the current owner does?
No.
Not worth paying loads for a boat for an occasional holiday home. Don't want all the training and certificates I'd need for it.
Not enough carrying capacity on a trials bike or in a back pack.
Non starter.

Gonna buy it.
View from the front garden.
Golden Eagles and Sea Eagles float past.
Virtually no pollution and traffic on the local roads is a rarity.
I'll find a vehicle somehow to do the job.
A Ford F150 with a stonking 6 litre V8 diesel might be the ideal choice?
We'll see!

£40k is indeed cheap... compared to what it's going to cost to get it habitable and install adequate utilities etc
It's been lived in recently. Adequate facilities are the diesel generator for electricity topped up by the 3 solar panels. As a seasonal home the wood fires are also adequate. A large house in the middle of nowhere comes with it's own charms and yes lack of luxury.
Water is pumped from a crystal clear stream into the house via three filters also.

Top of the list now is a Jeep Wrangler 4.0 straight six. Ridiculously low power but a great spread of torque and low ratio selection available. I'd imagine a big petrol engine pulling a very low gear would be close to perfect for 10 mph rough driving. I'll try and find one. LHD if it's cheaper.

I've not decided yet whether to drive there each time or find someone local to store whatever I buy. If it's the latter I suppose an off road quad bike could do it!

Much greyer today here. But idyllic nevertheless. Seals bobbing around offshore.
Looking at Jeeps, 10 grand gets me a really nice one. Defenders are silly money.

Hows he climb a hill in a boat?
The water leading to the property is virtually flat.

The easiest section. Still quite rough.

No chance of driving along the shore. It leads nowhere. To answer an earlier question.
Lots of ideas which I'm grateful for.
I really like the idea of a 4 litre petrol 6 pot in a low state of tune pulling low gears. Jeep Wrangler.

How would the postman or an Asda delivery get to the house?
They don't. Post is collected from a local post office. My father had the same situation when he lived in a remote part of Arizona.

That's just now locally. More to come.
