Need to sort a new car for Mum, her 56 plate Astra has developed a gearbox problem and frankly isn't worth repairing.

Only requirements really are auto box, possibly parking sensors, and not too big. Wider requirements are that I don't want her having to deal with garanges constantly, not having confidence in the car and/or having to swap it again in a couple of years.

Finding it difficult to look past a new Kia Picanto, using their scrappage scheme it's a brand new car for £12k, 7 years warranty etc - should last 10 years easily with her low mileage with minimal hassle. Very appealing, but also pretty small, slow and crap.

Alternatives that are a bit bigger, faster and better in the £10-12k range seem to be ~5 years or more old with ~50k on the clock. Is that just a symptom of the current market? I have no idea what these types of cars would have cost 2 years ago, or what that £10-12k would have bought, but a 5-6 year old focus with 50k on the clock for £12k doesn't seem a very good deal. I appreciate in this class auto box limits the selection and pushes the prices up, but how much higher is the price to buy now vs 'normal' price?

What would you do with the same budget/criteria?

Spec also dictates prices auto box reverse camera & parking sensors all add to the price.

As someone who pays attention to such things, how far would you say these are off historical averages?
