Wing Corrosion MY and Mileage?
Discussion
My PE (#754) is booked in on 31st at John Banks Cambridge for work on all four areas where the aluminium bodywork meets the plastic bumpers, i.e. both ends.
Thank you Julian for the tips, I’ll be sourcing nylon fixings for the JB team to fit after the repairs, plus coating with Dinotrol too (either them or me).
James.

Polishing the car today (yes I do have more important things to do!) I noticed a bit of bubbling on the passenger side front arch.
Doesn't seem to be related to any fastenings. Only about 1cm from top to bottom and similar but only on the inner part of the arch, on the drivers side.
Should I get it repaired now or wait till next service? I guess I will let Alpine know so at least they have a record of this.
Is it just a localised touch up repair or a full panel respray?
Normally I use Martins for servicing so I guess it will be at their bodyshop near Basingstoke. Any feedback from others that have used Martins?
Car is 21 reg and done about 30K miles from new.
I think I must be unlucky to have suffered all the minor niggles but still loving the car!

Sept ‘22 car and noticed these 2 oxidisation spots at the weekend, seems crazy that this is a problem at less than 2 years and 12k miles. I will be using Basingstoke and have seen good feedback, Alpine have been quick to offer an inspection to get it booked in. The car is used all year but it’s washed regularly, interesting to read about the clips. I will go through this thread soon and hopefully any tips heeded will prevent further issues. One of them is under PPF, dare I ask if that’s going to have to come off to repair?
Mine was done by Martins/Basingstoke. I'd spotted issues on 3 corners, when I took it in they went round very thoroughly and spotted a bit on the other corner too, so all 4 were done (photos taken, sent off to Alpine for approval then booked in a little later).
When I got the car back, both rear lights had small chips out of the plastic and the rear bumper wasn't particularly well aligned. Once raised as an issue with them they agreed to swap the rear lights and realign the bumper.

Mine is back from the warranty repairs, looks abs fine. But no joy whatsoever getting details or an explanation about replacement clips or metal v plastic. (GH of StA)
Does anyone have a definitive statement on this from Alpine ?
I asked Rubes which body shop manager he was in conversation with, not responded yet.
I’m unconvinced it’s not going to recur in a few years.

Alpine advise to replace the metal clip with a plastic one, part number 7703081199, one for each side on the rear.
You can easily check as the clips are towards the outer edges in the wheel arches. The plastic clips above are white, using a plastic bolt like Julian could be a good idea too.
It's worth replacing the metal with plastic, however I think dirt also becomes trapped between the bumper and wing and impact damage could be another cause. If I had the funds I would go for a full paint protection spray, as seems it's the only way to get protection around the edges which are most prone.
It doesn't put me off ownership at all but do feel quite helpless knowing it's inevitable. If your car is Alpine blue, Alpine put a tint of blue in the laquer, unfortunately I doubt most bodyshops are going to do the same, so the paintwork will never be quite as good.

These are the one I bought James.
Thank you Neil. These are the one I bought James.
The repairs on my car have not gone well. A really poor quality job. I’m very disappointed. I’ve asked JB to do it again. I’ve asked Alpine UK for help to oversee a better quality job. Fingers crossed it’s better at JB’s second attempt. I won’t share pictures at this point.
I will be doing everything I can to avoid a recurrence of the issue so I don’t have to go through this aggro again!

It's sad to hear about all these problems with the paintwork and corrosion including the shoddy repairs of a unique car but the more I read about the A110 problems the more it puts me off ever investing in one now unfortunately. I was still considering a 3 or 4 year old model. The only reason I would buy the new alpine A290 over the Renault 5 is to support the alpine brand but hopefully there won't be the same problems!!

Hi Julian - where did you source the nylon nuts and bolts, please? Thank you. James. 7en said:

That’s interesting to know because I’m due to have the rear bumper of my Alpine Blue A110 replaced due to previous accident damage. Do you have a reference of how to mix up the lacquer I could give to the bodyshop so make sure it’s done right?worldwidewebs said:
Having a look around the car today and I can see it in about 6 places. The worst being on the outside of the offside rear arch. Does it need to be looked at by the dealership prior to being booked in for repair or can Alpine customer services do this with supporting photos?
The offside rear arch was the worst on mine. The process seems to be (as I followed): book a slot at the dealer for corrosion assessment, take it in, they’ll have a look and take some pictures, and submit it to Alpine; they’ll call you back to confirm Alpine warranty will cover it, they’ll give you a date and then take it back to get it fixed. I reckon these issues are caused by lack of paint around the edges or small stone chips. I’ve made up some mud flaps on mine, still at a prototype stage at the moment but they’ll definitely stop stones:
Will probably re make them a bit longer to cover more of the arch at the back. I initially made them because I was disappointed that my PPF job didn’t look like it would really fully protect those edges.
