It's ok for what it is, but nowadays you can get some pretty impressive second hand stuff for 5.5 - 10.5K.

I'm beginning to think this thread must be some sort of hilarious joke I'm not in on.

Fair enough OP

If it was me I would buy a tidy older Honda Civic for around £2k

No nonsense best A-B car I ever owned, huge and practical inside and owners look after them, go on forever and really simple cars

I like the Sandero , but its still £6k to "save money". I understand the benefits of a new car, but running an older Jap looked after car gave me no bils at all.
My wife has an 8th gen Red 2008 Civic.
138,000 motorway miles, full history.

3200.00 GBP Honda reliability wins for me

There's nothing daft about running a cheap new car, especially if it frees up money for weekend PH fun! Dacia do seem to have cracked the 'cheap vs decent' equation that so many others have failed at in the past. And I actually like the look of the Duster...I totally see the argument in favour of an older Jap car, but id I had to replace today I would be having the same debate with myself. My problem would be, as noted above, I'd start ticking the options boxes and messing up the point of the exercise.

I don't think it's about getting a better car for the money, the OP wants A warrantee covered new car or an alternative it seems

Yep,my 7th gen Type R just turned over to 166k. No problems at all and it gets used hard, and in heavy traffic daily.

Not the best example perhaps but here's what under 6k could get you with a warranty

I think this is a great idea. Depreciation will be steep but the car will still have a value at 5/7 years so overall costs are going to be great. And your going to do with it is stick it in a car park all day, it's perfect. Make sure the stereo is good enough though.

People want these to be terrible to justify their own purchase of premier marque etc. But apparently their not bad and for your requirements they seem spot on with that good warranty and cheap servicing.

Love the idea of the spartan £5995 model, just wish it was a little bit cheaper (yes really!) so you didn't have the dilemma of it "only" being another £500 for the fancier model, then £500 more than that for the next one, etc

That's how they make these economically viable of course smile
It just shows how overpriced Ladas used to be. 30 years ago Rivas were about £3-4k I think. Today Dacia are doing the same thing but cheaper. I wonder what £5.995 would be in 1985 money?

I think there i huge potential in these no-nonsense cars. A neighbour has a Duster. The "posh" version with alloys. They are not car people (academics at the local Uni) and they treat it as a means of transport. It's got a dent and a few scuffs and is used to transport tem and their baby - push chair/pram etc.

They love it. It just does the job.

If I needed cheap new reliability I'd get one.

My 2 cent's worth: get the central locking and electric windows. Having lived with a povvo spec Mk3 Golf for the last two years, I can be sure you WILL miss those things. Apart from that, I have no experience of these cars so can't say much more except that I (unlike soooo many people in the world and on here!) CAN see where you're coming from and think it is a good move. Go for it, get the diesel.

Good point, I found myself looking at a cheap city car that I can leave parked at the airport without worrying (VW Up!), started with a base price of 8200€ new after rebate and had it up to 13820€ after going over the configurator a few times. Which is the exact point where I scrapped the idea.

As for the original posting, I think Dacias are fine everyday cars.
Cars in general have become so advanced in all important aspects that even the most basic and cheapest of cars allow you to get around in reasonable comfort. They also become extremely expensive when you look at the higher models and what they offer, simply because people care about image and just accept paying more for a relatively stty sat nav option than for a new phone with a nav application that would cost a fraction of a price. I'm guilty of it myself, it's too easy to justify speccing a car to the point where it's objectively not a smart economic decision anymore. That's how most car makers make money after all.

Plus driving a relatively slow and basic car makes you appreciate a potential weekend toy even more.

I agree. Having to reach over and unlock each door or hand crank the windows is a novelty for 2 minutes then becomes really annoying.

The UN white spec ones don't even come with a radio which is a bit too austere for me. A mid spec one is best.

They are really popular on mainland Europe. Shame we don't get the Dokker or Lodgy models as well - probably because they would steal sales from Renault.

I drive a Dacia Logan as a private hire taxi & have been surprised with how decent the car is for a cheap workhorse. The 1.5 DCI engine is powerful enough but very economic at the same time. It has e/w, c/l, cd player & cruise so I don't feel like its too basic, & i believe that leather is a £600 option & "media centre"/screen another £250.
I've been driving it regularly from new since last October & apart from servicing & tyres there has been no issues at all, which (considering we've done 79k miles in it & its only off the road for 3-4 hours a day) is brilliant. The only issue I have is some of the buttons are in unusual places (for me) but that's a none issue really.
So I can recommend it from experience, just don't get one in poverty spec as its very cheap to upgrade from base spec & you'll have to sell it one day (who would want keep fit windows and no c/l).

Perfectly sensible purchase.

If you are looking for hassle free, basic, reliable transport.... look no further.

Aircon... Really only needed 2 months of the year
Radio.... Get one at Halfords.
Remote locking.... depends how often you have passengers in the car...

Do you know... in the 1970's and 80's.... we managed just fine with...
...Wind up windows...
...No central locking...
...A radio with one speaker...

It is quite a sensible thing to do actually.

A radio!? Only those fancy dan Japanese cars have them. Cheap far eastern rubbish, British cars will always be the best!

By the way, does anyone have any jump leads I could borrow?

Except when you try to sell something with a spec like that. Less of an issue if you finance it of course.

Not sure if they have the awful driving position of the Clio that they are based on either. You can certainly spot lots of the parts in the cabin.

I would normally agree with you... but.... buyers of that type of car..... aren't buying on spec... New or secondhand..
