It does seem a bit odd, that is has a 'proper' rugged 4x4 chassis designed for off road performance, fairly utilitarian exterior and interior, and the the engine out of a fast estate car. Time will tell I guess.
LS3's into old Defenders are quite a common conversion. I saw an M3 engine in one recently too.

Would love to get something like this, get off roading lessons and go overlanding. Just some awesome overlanding videos on youtube in countries with a good amount of space, Australia, Africa and the Americas.

Add a Tesla Model Y for a family / town runabout. Some sort of convertible 2 seater fun car for track days and B road blasts.

Would be my perfect 3 car garage.

Be very interesting to see how many appear on sale immediately, having been ordered in better times, or for speculation purposes - I think it unlikely they will be fetching “overs”

A fair few, especially given the recent hefty price increase that won’t have been applied to the cars being delivered now. A nice little profit for some people even if they aren’t selling at overs.

Saw two black ones in convoy at the bottom of our road. They looked absolutely terrific, very expensive looking for some reason i can’t quite fathom?

Never held any interest but I’d like to have a poke around one now having seen one. As others have said, they’re way bigger than they look in the photos.

They are. Happened to be flying back from Inverness as they were getting ready for a press launch mid January. About 20 there. Had a good nosey round them and sat in on (no pics obviously!), but Ineos chaps really enthusiast etc. Saw one on the road before getting to airport and from a distance thought it was a G Wagon.

I think you pretty much are, if not the target market, than the actual market. My thoughts re: the Grenadier remain unchanged - it's the Breitling aeronautical chronometer or Doxa diving watch but for 4x4s - a capable and generally well-engineered product that most of its buyers want rather than need, and is more about character, aspiration, difference and wish fulfilment than utility.
Nicely put. There is a weird mismatch between the capability of these to get into some real literal scrapes, and the expense of them that means that people will be wanting to avoid those same scrapes. Why scrape this when you could get a less compromised car and a scrape-able offroader for the same price?

I'm not in the market, but I'd still rather have a new LR, and get to know my local techs on a first name basis biggrin.
At least when you drive a new Defender down the road the chances are that the bloke on the pavement who shouts 'C U Next Tuesday!' Is in fact your local mechanic and he genuinely means he'll see you next Tuesday. biggrin

This made me spit my beer out. I must be doing it wrong as my last RRS and now real 2022 Defender just won’t break down. I actually think it’s a great achievement that they got this made. Jim R will be remembered more for this legacy than all the pills and potions he’s sold.

I don’t dislike it but it’s not for me. I personally feel my Defender is a better vehicle using any measure. Each to their own.

Yeah I mean, fair play to the guy, and much wider team, behind it. As said, to pull it off and get even this far is a huge huge achievement.

All they have to do now is sell!
If you throw more than £1billion at a new car project, it's amazing how much you can achieve.

Oh without a doubt.

But as a counter to that, TVR, Dyson, both thrown huge amounts of resources at getting a car to production and failed.

The LS is about as basic an engine as you can get these days. No where near the same level of complexity as the BMW engines used.

First of the press reviews from an Australian magazine, the rest will no doubt flood in tomorrow when the embargo lifts.

A fairly glowing conclusion - I get the impression from this and the Top Gear review that the Grenadier is almost as good as a G Glass for half the price, straight out of the starting blocks. Haters gonna hate nonetheless, I suppose...

A G Class is pretty rubbish at being a modern car, I can’t imagine the addition of a solid front axle in this improves things.

So not a commercial vehicle for tax purposes??
I'm buying a commercial station wagon, so class N1, with a reduced rear passenger space to favour the load bay. In the UK, that means less vehicle excise duty from the start and reduced, "commercial" speed limits. The Grenadier is too heavy to be classed as a dual-purpose vehicle, unlike the old Defender.

HMRC are being a bit coy about whether you can recover the VAT, stating it depends on circumstances, but the expectation is the N1s can recover the VAT, the Belstaff special editions cannot. I am not VAT registered, so not an issue for me. I did not want some of the bells and whistles on the Belstaff Editions, wanted to reduce the entry price and wanted the RFL reductions. My vehicle will be £60,821 delivered, (at the old price) and nearly £67k after the price rises.

I have a slot for a commercial 5 door around March/April, however the dealer keeps telling me I need to speak to my accountant about whether it is a commercial vehicle and whether I can claim the vat back and treat it as company van! It suggests to me it doesnt comply.

I have asked for clarification on a number of occasions and all they can come up with is that i can contract hire it and claim half the vat back!!

I said yes, what a brilliant idea and I can then pay company car tax at around £700/month on a car £58k car with 295g of CO2 rather than £110/month van tax plus all the fuel benefits you get.

I think they need to sort their act out if they want these things to sell as probably going to get my deposit back. I got a call a month or two back say you cant have carpets any more and there was some random email today about it not being the alarm they said it was going to be.

There will be things like the things like the alarm, it's a brand new vehicle from a first time vehicle manufacturer. I've been told I will be able to claim the VAT back.

Looking at the rules, I think you will have a problem as it is not a dual purpose vehicle - it is too heavy, and it is not a commercial vehicle as it's payload is insufficient.

This makes more sense than the bare rules, https://www.ttrbarnes.com/car-or-van-hmrc-tax-rule...

The rules around CO2 emissions for commercial and private vehicles, (the ones that Ineos have to meet to be able to sell vehicles in the UK without emission fines), are different, so the N1 classification probably does not help you.

Grenadier. Is that the one built by sir Jim Ratcliffe ? The massive brexiteer promotor who builds them abroad ? And then moved to Monaco so he doesn’t have to pay any taxes ? The ineos chap who makes hand gel and profits from COVID . The man who promotes single use plastics ? Ps. Is piston heads working for him now ? They normally only do stories on stuff they advertise on their website .
