End of diversion. Back to topic!

Seems we’re wasting our time thinking of where the event may be transferred to….. Because it appears that next year’s Detling has been fixed:-

Unless of course the inevitable early April rain will stop all building work!

I mean have it as a show in it's own right at Crystal Palace instead of Detling.
I don't think you appreciate the level of work or costs that go into the Sprint. This is not a 'showground' like Stoneleigh or Detling and has to have special dispensation from the council etc. Apart from anything else there is no large display hall.
I don't think it would be a breeze!

I used to arrange corporate entertainment events, and what I did learn was that if you don't ask, you don't get, and sometimes when you do ask the results can be pleasantly surprising. As for a hall, a guesstimate on Google Earth puts the hall used last weekend at about 2,000m/sq. I've seen temporary buildings at places like Hampton Court that, I believe, are far larger. I understand that doing it that way would mean the show having to move up a level, but I'm afraid to say that I only see it moving in one direction in it's present guise.

I think relocating to somewhere capable of hosting some sort of live events is absolutely essential, as it is both a spectacle, and can be used to give the public a taster of anything they might be interested in. Static shows just don't seem to cut it any more, and I think that moving somewhere closer to London would generate more interest. I seem to remember going to a kit car show at Sandown Park many years ago, and I'm sure they had trial events there.

Palace might be too ambitious, but I'm sure there must be better venues than Detling.

Oh.

I was just looking at Sandown Park on Google Earth, and saw this.

6 meters wide. 180 meter straight. Oh well.

I have raced on that kart track, 'twas like a dodgy potholed b-road with loose chunks of concret when I drove it!! Could be a good 1st gear sprint though!

Perfect for a Dakar then!

I don't remember even seeing it, but if it's knackered, fair enough.

How about this for the location of a new Kit Car show.

The O2 (Dome) in North Greenwich. It is surrounded by largely unused car park. I know these are need when big event help there, but are empty the rest of the time. The club cars would use these. The manufacture would use the same areas inside and outside the O2 as the Christmas fair. From memory there is a lot more room inside than the new hall at Detling.

I would make this a free to enter show for the public. How do you pay for it then? Simple the O2 would gain from the interest, as would the kit car industry as a whole. The manufacture and Kit Car press would pay for their pitch, this may put the cost up compare to other shows and kill this idea. How many cars do they sell at a show?

Over to you.....Please tell me what you think.

Good idea good venue certainly worth a try. However, whether anyone will fund such an idea given the poor showing of the last few shows and the economic downturn is another question altogether.

But I welcome any suggestions that bring more business into the kit car world. Clearly we need to do everything we can to keep the enthusiasm for Kit Cars going. SVA (10% of build cost as a reasonable estimate?) and the hassle and complexity of being sure you have met the regulations and VAT at 20% make Kit Cars less affordable and more exacting to build and register.

Undoubtedly this has raised the standards: but it has also removed a good deal of interest.

Your idea appeals to me and I would certainly go to such a show. Would enough others?

If that was possible there would be constant shows at the O2. They are there to make money, and being one of the premium venues in London, I really don't think that something as abstract as a kit car show is going to add much to their kudos.

I suspect that the entrance fee is not negligible. Even at Detling I guess that they had a couple of thousand paying £10, and I guess that the O2 would cost far more than that.

I think that an outdoor area with some halls would be more suitable than an indoor area with some outdoor areas. We have so many agricultural grounds and old airfields in the south east that I find it difficult to believe that Detling is really the best option.

Incidentally, I Googled Sandown Park Kit Car show, and came up with this glorious picture!

From a certain poster on here!

I would!

Having said all that, I'm sure that Grovesnor take all this into account, and feel that the most profitable option is what they are doing now. They seem to think that their current offering is the most profitable, and I'm just talking as a casual punter, and they do this on a daily basis, so I guess they must know what they are doing.

Yep, and it's about 100 times bigger than all of Detling's halls combined - isn't it?

The next suggestion will no doubt be that the humble kit car industry takes the Excell Centre or the whole of the NEC complex. And to ensure they are full, kit car owners are paid to take their cars there and the public are paid too; on a rent-a-crowd basis. The organisers reward would be a warm glow and bank balance to rival that of Greece.

It's the joy of forums!!!! smilesmilesmile
