Dreamshack - thanks for the info, interesting set up with a few options then and proves I have to do more homework on the beetle mechanics. Having built a Fisher Fury I am used to sierra mechanics, double wishbones and inboard shocks.

i hear you there! We are going to be offering an "upgrade" option with wishbones all round like some of our other cars, pretty much the same stuff you are used to but with pushrods

other big problem with bug front is its HEAVY, but most of the weight is sprung so not as bad as it could be, and a bit of weight over the front is needed, trust me!

I am looking forward to seeing the 4x4 discovery version. Surely this as a donor must be more practical and easier/cheaper to source than the old beetle chassis.

Yes, I think the disco will be marginally cheaper to buy donors. With the added advantage that disco chassis do not really rust much.
Beetles are still plentiful, but prices vary hugely with no real logical reason.
I just got back today from a 400 mile round trip to pick up a restored beetle rolling chassis, with engine, V5 etc, decent wheels, V5, Tax exempt, for £450, but they are getting harder to find cheap. Realistic budget for donor with minor repairs is around £1000, you can get a disco for less.
One thing though, if any major assembly on a disco is buggared it will probably cost more to replace than the bug equivilent.
It's swings and roundabouts, and hard to compare, as although they will have the same overrall look, they will be very different animals indeed!
It will be good to have the disco version finished this month so you guys can take a look

The land rover Disco/ rangie based version

Here are some sneaky pics.

front and rear not done yet, but trust me it will look great ;-) Front will have hinged skeletal bonnet/grille/wings, rear several bolt in options from seats, to load bed/pickup, to winch and spare wheel carriers etc.

The disco version looks a beast, SBC v8 conversion for me or go the whole hog and add an LS1.

Hope you did not get too cold on the way into work today ! I followed you in the Red IRS Rail (reg ***390L) down the A272 this morning between Petersfield and Winchester, it look so cool (in more than one) and has given me a boost to get the v6 engine closer to completion over easter.

Love this. I always wanted a road going sandrail.

Unfortunately I haven't got a garage or enough time to build one. Or, as it really is, to strip a beetle and repair the floorpan.

But thought I'd let you know that it's a great idea, I'd have one in a flash if I could, and the eBay ad is great.

Looking forward to seeing what the body panels look like. That'd help keep the cabin temps up a bit I hope?

That was the new owner, he is loving it. Was he poodling along or zooming?

Not many places to get it sideways on that road though :-) and given it was only 3 deg C I suspect the first signs of frostbite may have started to take root slowing his reactions.

I drove to the SVA in my Fury when it was just above freezing from the south coast to Gillingham, even with a heater and full body (no hood) I was well and truly frozen by the time I got there so with no bodywork or heater I am sure wakes you up in the morning and is a good remedy for a hangover.

Looked well planted on the road with a reasonable amount of suspension movement to make is a decent ride by the looks of it. Looking good.

As for a gearbox to fit on the Mazda V6, been looking at the Boxster ones (same as the Audi A4 I think, these have been fitted in Transporters upside down with Passat/Audi engines with no real problems) just to keep it in the family (sort of) which are supprisingly cheap second hand. Just need to identify a clutch plate of the right diametre and spline to use on the Mazda flywheel (the spline is different, typical). But should make a tidy package in the back of a Rail. Still working on management approval but this is slow going at the moment as I have had a Mazda MX6 shaped "ornament" on my drive for nearly two years without much progress, let's see what I can get done at Easter !!

Someone else showed me that yesterday! That's not one of mine, but we have built a few similar trucks in the past. I swore we would never touch Land Rovers again after getting a hernia working on one, (long story) but we have gone back to this Disco road legal version because so many people asked.
