1967 Tuscan V8
Discussion
It must of been a popular colour, according to the old cardbook log book, our LWB Tuscan (SWR9F) was originally "Regal Red". It was then painted a Silvery Blue by Martin Bolsover in 1976, the red can be seen coming through in some places. The history file also has a lot of big bills in 1973 and 1974 to a Ralph Taylor, who was in the RAF.
Although Martin Bolsover was well known at places like Shelsley Walsh I do wonder what Ft Lt Taylor did with the car, in 1974 and 1975. The engine work was done by Ian Richardson V8 Developments. So I can't see it was just a tourer, or just blasting up and doen the runway. In the file there are a few references to suspension work, including with Mike Bigland. Martin also had more work done on the suspension, but he also changed the wheels. The car is pictured in "Success against the Odds" at Curborough in 1976.

Hi David
Is your car anywhere near on the road ?, always wondered where SWR 9F had ended up any pictures as is now ?
No, it's been in the shed 30 years, it's always been must get round to it at some point, so it is a bit like the picture, but a bit worse for storage. Dad bought it from Ed Stevens, but the NSR wheel had come off at some point. One day...Is your car anywhere near on the road ?, always wondered where SWR 9F had ended up any pictures as is now ?
thx Richard,
so then this car is also OLD 37E I guess.
About that ML car, did Martin Lilley owned 2 TVR Tuscans V8 over a period
?
fisrt that Tuscan V8 SE (mk1 rear lights) which went from RR Red to sort of two tone red/silver and later red again?
and then later that type 2 with mk2 rear lights etc, Tuscan V8 LWB? (converted to that black race car)
so then this car is also OLD 37E I guess.

Hi Rene,Yes i think it must be OLD 37 E i take it its in France now ?.
I think Martin Lilley must have had at least 3 Tuscan V8 cars, the Red /silver 500 ML, plus the Black W/B Tuscan, but also the Blue and silver car below was once his i think, it was Registered SKY 3 i think, im sure James will correct me if im wrong.

Indeed, also funny that giggle after you gave it some throttle, from the video maker I guess
I also looked on the French TVR forum to see if there was more info or pictures about that 'red' OLD 37E Tuscan, but could not find it, I could find a LHD Tuscan V8 SE over-there, a green one...that had undergone a restoration from about 7 years.

You are correct this car was indeed SKY3 in the 60s. Its first registered keeper was one Jim Goddard TVR dealer and racing driver. Jim sold the car on to a Lord Thomas Hirst in July 68 shortly before his death in a vixen at croft. Martin defiantly has history with the car but it is unlikely it was his daily driver.Slow M said:

The Tuscan was initially offered with just a V8 engine option, but in 1969 a less thirsty V6 engine option was offered. TVR built just 174 Tuscans, 101 featuring the cheaper V6 engine; the V8 option was discontinued in 1970 after demand for the V8 configuration fell. In total, it is believed that just 73 V8 engined cars were sold by TVR.
Where did those numbers come from? Best,
B.
Where there really 73 V8 powered Tuscans made? I ask as that seems like a rather high number, when viewed in relationship to a total production run of 174.

a book speaks of
--Tuscan V8 = 28, built in 1967
--Tuscan V8 LWB = 24, built in 1967 and 1968
--Tuscan V8 Wide Body = 21, built in 1968 to 1970
These totals are the numbers that are in the Tipler Book. He also gives 101 V6 Tuscans.--Tuscan V8 = 28, built in 1967
--Tuscan V8 LWB = 24, built in 1967 and 1968
--Tuscan V8 Wide Body = 21, built in 1968 to 1970
At the time TVR were also making over 1100 Vixens (including 1300 and 2500). So saying TVR made 174 Tuscans out of 1300 cars may sound better. Any Auction house would like to quote a book...
...however.
Consider the 21 Wide bodied cars, which is taken as the cars with a MAL number.
A list has been published online in a description of MAL010. It shows that the first 14 to 15 had "Vixen" style bodies, and only has 8 wide bodied cars in the list. To this could one add the JDG one built by the demonstrator in the US and the Liam Churchill 4x4 car?
The new Filby book now says 10 wide bodied cars, so what happened to the 11 others Filby mentioned in 1976!
So then were all 24 LWB cars built, or were some of them also given MAL numbers?
Doesn't one of the Tridents has a LW chassis number?
Similarly TVR_Blog says that LW001 was going to be 200/016 in the SWB series. The OP car is 200/035 and the old Rauh Griffith Register had Tuscans to 200/026, but did this start and continue after the ten Lilley Griffiths?
Since then the odd Grantura, Vixen or M has had a V8 added, but does that make it a Griffith or Tuscan V8?

I had 'loan' of the original factory build sheets for cars built from 1965 to 1973 and I seem to recall 23 (or so) V8 Tuscans being built
although I could be wrong on this, as the LVX cars were different to the LWB ones
Colin do you mean LVX (Vixen) or MAL, the MAL010 report quotes you from Sprint June 1991 saying 58 cars.although I could be wrong on this, as the LVX cars were different to the LWB ones

Dave, you have the advantage in having old Sprints; I gave mine to the Club archives in 1997! If that's what I wrote in 1991, then take that as correct, rather than my fading memory of 22 years later.
Even Peter Filby admits that his 1976 book has plenty of 'inaccuracies', with many of the 'facts' being told to him over several pints of Boddingtons

Tuscan v8 widebodies I think only number 7 with another bitsa. I have seen the number 21 quoted but no one I have spoken to in TVR circles thinks that this number were actually made.If that's what I wrote in 1991, then take that as correct, rather than my fading memory of 22 years later.

When I asked Martin Lilley about the MAL chassis, he was sure that every MAL car left the factory with a wide body (although he was probably in the south of France at the time the cars were being built )Gassing Station | TVR Classics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
